Final Project – Oona & Allie (Moon)

For some reason, the link above does not format the site in the same way as it does through atom… (the differences are huge) and I’m not sure why.

idea: our idea was inspired by childhood and how kids like to design their own dream room. we collaborated and created a room based off of our own ideas/ what we wanted our room to look like when we were little.

coding: the coding for this is really simple, but because of the time we had during finals season as well as how our coding ability is not the greatest. nonetheless, it managed to come about!

these are all of the buttons on the home page that link to the pages where we explain why we added the thing in our room/ a person childhood story.

this is what one of the pages the buttons links to looks like!

images: the images were inspired by hand drawing and collage.

overall: i feel like if there was more time, we could have really expanded this project and made it a next kind of level. for what we have now, i definitely feel proud about it. compared to when we first entered comm lab and i didn’t know how to code, or how to even make a site like this, i feel really proud of what i was able to do with this project. comm lab was so amazing! and i’m really excited to major in IMA.

Week 12: Final Project Proposal – Murray

Concept

For the final project, Ying and I will be working together to create an interactive photo gallery along with some stories about the place. Ying wanted to to do this because a photo shouldn’t just be visualized by the audience but it should also expose the audience to different senses such as hearing which I myself agreed with as well. Additionally, we planned to add more features on each photo such as time, temperature, and a definite location. Doing this will allow us to express our picture and convey a message that our audience will then be able to interpret.

We also want to add as much interaction as possible between the user and make it visible and clear for the user to interact with. We’ll also utilize the mouse cursor which will then tell user what to do by showing a small text over it. We will also add sound effects to several texts that users can hoover and make it visible and stand out. We hope that the aesthetic of our page will be modern and clean will minimal color mixing, so we may also use a background that’s mostly white or black. We also plan to add a video by showing a zoom-in clip to the specific location by using Google Earth Studio.

Week 13: Net Art Project Vincent – Moon

Vincent and Jon’s Final Project: DE-STRESS

Concept:

The idea we had for our website project was creating a website to de-stress the person interacting with it. We were brainstorming ideas and thinking about how stressful these couple weeks would be with finals coming up, then the idea just appeared. We think that this is important to the audience because during finals week, emotions spike up and the atmosphere everywhere feels tense. Studying in an environment like this would lessen productivity of students, but through this website hopefully the tension would gradually get smaller.

Within our website, there would be a specific action you have to complete, for example popping 15 bubble-wrap with background sound effects. Once you finish the action, the next action appears, for example squeezing a stress ball, etc. These actions are to stimulate a sense of completion for the user, giving them the satisfaction of finishing something and at the same time giving them a feel of calmness. We also plan to make the website look aesthetically pleasing, so it would make the website as least annoying as possible.

Our sources are probably pretty weird, we weren’t really inspired by any specific artists, but more we were inspired by the website “theuselessweb”. We were playing around on the website and many of the websites that had shown up were just us clicking or scrolling around, and that’s where our idea of finishing actions had come from. The psychology study above was something that I had read a while ago, and it was something that I wanted to try and put into a project, because finals can be depressing, so hopefully if we are able to achieve what we plan for the website, students will have a better time studying for finals.

Production:

The main techniques we’ll use is probably javascript and maybe some p5. For the sounds within the website, we can look for sounds online or if possible, create the sounds ourselves, but with the limited time it’ll most likely be from online. There will be no video on our website. The user interacts with our project with use of the trackpad, specifically scrolling, clicking, and moving. We didn’t include the keyboard because that would be too extra for a website that is trying to stimulate calmness. The hardest part of our project will probably be thinking up of enough actions for the website so that it is varied and not repetitive.

Final Project Proposal – Jon with Vincent

Our ideal is stress relief – we want interacting with our project to relieve stress. Our project will include a number of small, simple activities such as popping bubble wrap or throwing ball in a hoop/bin. Once you do one activity, you can go on to the next one; each of them will be very different from the last, allowing us to try a lot of different types of stuff. The activities will probably be in randomized order, but there’ll also be a side menu where you can choose which one to do. We got our inspiration from theuselessweb.com’s random standalone, single-purpose websites. The bulk of the work will be done in JS and P5; we haven’t looked into specifics yet but it should be very doable. We haven’t yet decided on the art style or overall aesthetic (or if each activity should have a distinct style), that’ll come later. First and foremost is implementation of the interactivity and functionality.

Final Project Outline – Tenielle Ellis

Final Project Outline

Concept

Inspired by the numerous Net Art examples we have seen in class as well as finding our own, I discovered common themes: individuality and creativity. Although all of the projects were different, each of them expressed their own message and delivered it in a creative way. For my project, I would like to include those themes, as well as making my project a bit more personal.

For my project, I want to create a website that is based on my personal experiences using images, videos, and quotes. There will be quotes that pop up on the webpage, then afterwards a collage of videos and pictures that relate to it will pop up. I will put together videos and photos from my life that apply to what the quote is trying to convey. The quotes will either be life sayings that I have sort’ve “abided” by, or famous quotes that I’ve been inspired from. Although this may seem a bit general, I think this is a very creative concept because it is my outlook and perspective on what the quote means, and how it relates to me, then use visuals to depict that.

I was inspired to do this because throughout all of our projects, I haven’t felt like I put my own “personal touch”. I think that this project would be great to do that because it is all inspired by personal messages and outlooks from the artist. Sometimes as viewers we may not totally understand the message some of these Net Art examples are trying to convey, because only the person that built the website will truly get it. Also, growing up my mother would put positive life quotes all over the house and taught us (her children) how to read some of the most complicated quotes, try to understand it, and see how it applies to our life. I am also a big visual learner, so having these visuals to help the user depict the quotes also relates back to when I was younger and was trying to understand what these quotes mean.

  2.  http://astronaut.io/#

These two sources combined is what I envision my project to look like. For the first source, how the words are spanning across the screen, that’s how I want my quotes to be displayed. Then, from the second source, take the visuals that are continuously popping up, and place that over the quotes. However, from the second source instead of the background being the world, the background would be the quotes. So, after the user is finished reading the quote, the visual will pop up afterwards to represent, or depict what the quote means. I really like this technique of net art, because although I am not too artistically creative (like drawings, paintings, etc.), I do have a knack for using words to express myself, and I would love to tie in personal experiences to try and explain that. Hopefully with these two techniques combined, I will have my finished project.

Production

The production for this website will hopefully be interactive with the user. After the quote either spans across the webpage, or just pops up (using text fade out & in), I will give the user allotted time (maybe 30 seconds) then  include a pop up with a leading question asking the user: “Did you understand?” or “So, did you get it?” and then having the two options of “Yes, let me see!” and “Nah, let me read that one more time”  and if the user clicks the “yes” button, my video collage containing both video and photo will pop up and they will see the visual representation. If the person clicks on the other button (no), then the pop-up will disappear, and the user will be led back to the quote/saying to re-read it, and then the same pop-up will show to ask the user whether or not they understood or got the quote. Hopefully, if they continuously don’t get the quote, they will be inclined or curious to see if the visual representation can help. Also, I will mostly be dependent on using css style as well as javascript, and will need to do a lot of photo/collage editing in order to have the “right” visual/representation to accurately convey the quotes/sayings.
