Week 7: “The Danger of a Single Story“ –Murray

In “The Danger of a Single Story”, I thought it was really interesting how Chimamanda Adichie talks about her life growing up in a multi-cultural environment, being raised by Nigerian parents but growing up in England. By having this multi-cultural experience, Adichi is able to have a wider perspective and knowledge on certain issues and is able to express that throughout her writing. In many ways, I think that applies to me. Because I also grew up in a multi-cultural environment having been raised by Chinese parents who immigrated to the USA. By having a multi-cultural environment, one will be able to truly understand the context of situations and have a better grasp of ideals rather than being misunderstood and will ultimately avoid confusion and miscommunication as well.

Week 09- Video project proposal – Hannah, Laura and Chloe

For our video project we are planning on exploring the topic of freedom, its various forms, and its significance to people from a variety of backgrounds. To do this we will conduct interviews people in and around the school and ask that they speak about what freedom means to them. Part of what we are interested in is the way in which each person will interpret the words freedom and what context they choose to discuss it in (ie freedom of speech, freedom of religion, physical freedom, freedom from family expectations, etc) We plan to begin with a montage of historical images pertaining to freedom and then introduce an interactive display that allows different video clips to be qued. We intend for our project to convey the breadth and variety of freedoms that some of us do and don’t have, and the role freedom plays in our decisions, intentions, and hopes. Our idea was inspired by Obstruction 3, which is for the creator to create whatever he wants. In this sense, freedom is overwhelming and the obstructions (limits to freedom) from before had provided a scaffolding upon which to build. Our project overall grapples with questions of the need for freedom/individuality versus obstructions/frameworks, and we hope to create a thought provoking web of perspectives on freedom itself.

Week 7: Video Project (Moon) – Susie, Anica and Ying

Proposal
Our group’s video project is “to end stories in one sentence”. Based on some famous stories that everyone may possibly know or hear about it, we will create different storylines that may end these famous stories at the beginning or before the key scene. These endings may be interesting, funny, bad or open endings.

We now have two plans for this topic. The first plan is to focus on one story and make four different endings. For this plan, we will pay more attention to the variety of endings. The second plan is to find four different stories with an ending each. For this plan, we may think more about the stories themselves. We can all make funny endings or bad endings.

Next week, we will start to find the stories for us to create the endings and try to design the layout of the website.

Week 09: Video Project Proposal-Laura, Chloe and Hannah

Our video project wants to focus on the topic of freedom. We want to interview people from different countries and regions about their understanding of freedom and divided them into different categories. We also want to do some research on the freedom concept over history and create a Montage at the beginning.

On the web page, we will first show the opening montage video. After that, the second page will be some balloons or bubbles floating in the sky and the user can click on the balloon. The balloon will explode and link to the interview video of the students. When all the balloons are exploded, the ending video will be shown with the voiceover of our own description of freedom.

Week 09: Video Project – Chloe, Hannah and Laura

Project Idea:

The five obstructions film inspired us to explore varying ideas of Freedom using our video project. We will interview different people to explore what freedom means to different people, why it is important to them, and to juxtapose contrasting views. We also want to show the audience what Freedom has meant to people throughout history, and will compile a montage of videos depicting that.

Execution:

When users access our page, we will automatically play a montage of videos showing what freedom has meant to different people throughout history. Afterward, we will lead users to a second page where users are supposed to click on moving balloons, that are floating past the screen. Users can opt to click on different balloons, in order to view videos of interviews we conduct with students around NYU Shanghai as they describe what freedom really means to them and why it is important to them.
