Reading Response 3 – Enchanted Objects – zeyao li

Since I missed the class of “Enchanted Design”, This David Rose’s presentation really helps me understand the whole class and what enchanted objects are. He firstly talks about the four futures. For me the most interesting part is Prosthetics. It means embedding the technology on ourselves. This definitely makes me think of wearable technologies. Although people are trying to integrate technology on human beings, almost every time they released a product, they failed. Such as Google Glass or Snapchat Glass. I think this is not only just about adding technology on the human-wear objects, but also considering the way people use these objects.

What I also like about his presentation is that he redefines the relationship between us and those apps on the digital screen. Can we apply those functions on the app to ourselves? Why do we need an extra screen for those good ideas? It really made me question the functionality of apps on our phone and rethink the way we use it. However, I feel like people in this society are already used to have a smartphone and use apps on it. We can’t just cut the use of our phone and force people to embed technology on themselves. I think a phone is a perfect hub for every external distraction. If we apply these distractions on our body, it’s hard to cut it off.

Class 07: Future Trends

The Boring Company

Elon Musk’s company, The Boring Company, present a new vision of transportation. With America’s political anxiety as the backdrop, Musk has tapped into the public desire for top-down change. Many people feel the need for contemporary solutions to growing contemporary problems. In order to meet this need they have presented a radical reinvention of the transportation system. Musk proposes that the construction of underground transportation tunnels can drastically improve the average person’s travel experience. This solution hopes to reduce commute time and alleviate road congestion. Two other promises The Boring company makes is that the tunnel system will reduce noise and air pollution as well as have an expedited construction process. Empathy Peer design Workshop/ Exercise _ Kalkidan Fikadu

In this workshop, I with my teammate built an object using Lego bricks. Then both me and my teammate closed our eyes, and I walked him through the lego re-creation process, by touching the already build lego object with my hands and guessing what kind of components it’s made of. According to the information I received from me, my teammate made an effort to construct the lego. However, trying to figure out each lego bricks that made my object, I took apart the object, and the object no-longer had its original shape or structure. Because of that, we had to restart the process of co-creation again. The step-back had made me realize how hard communication can be unless we learn to understand each other. In the second round, we were able to create mutual understanding and, learn from our previous mistakes and create a lego object that somewhat looked similar.

my peer and I also exchanged our final project ideas and tried to question, come up with more ideas for each other’s project.

Here are some of the ideas suggested by me based on research I did in class.

–  Making it a multi-purpose tool

      –  Similar to Stylus Pens – 2 in 1 Touch Screen & Writing Pen (Amazon

– How do we charge the pen

       1.   Pen stand

       2.   Friction  https://www.technologyreview.com/s/507386/how-friction-may-someday-charge-your-cell-phone/

this inspires users to write more.

       3. The pen is pluggable

       4. small plug that can be connected with a power outlet

Design Questions :

  • Does it work with ink?  How can it be refilled when the ink is out
  • Can you make the pen measure high productivity by just moving it continuously, without writing?

More Ideas

  • Users can change what color they find attractive instead of setting it by default ( for instance I prefer black)
  • Connecting it with an app that measures productivity over a long period of time
