Kinetic Light (Eric) | Color Studies | Yang Gao

Assignment 1 :

For assignment 1, I mixed gray with many bright colors like red, yellow, green, and blue to make them more in the rage of chromatic gray.

Assignment 2 :

For assignment 2, I chose several bring colors like red, yellow, green, and blue to make different shapes that fall in the prismatic color saturation range.

Assignment 3 :

Original:

For the original one, I choose the same pink color inside and make the surrounding color purple and green. One center color looks more orange than the other one.

1)

For exercise 1, I changed the value(brightness) of the surrounding color and it makes the center color more different than the original one. One looks brighter, and the other one looks darker.

2)

For exercise 2, I changed the hue of the surrounding color and maintain the saturation and brightness of them. The color in the center still looks different. The left one seems darker.

3)

For exercise 3, I changed only the saturation of the surrounding color. The left one still looks more orange than the right one and compared to the original one, the center color looks more gray as well.

4)

For exercise 4, I changed the hue, saturation and brightness of the surrounding color, which makes the center color more different from each other than the original one.

5)

In the original one, the left one is more orange than the right one, so I made the right one more orange than the left one and the center color looks the same with different color surroundings.

Assignment 4 :

For the first sequence of colors, I changed the hue, value and saturation.

For the second sequence of colors, I changed the saturation and brightness.

The combination of two sequences of colors looks kinetic and creates an afterimage effect.

Assignment 5 :

For Assignment 5, I made a page of circles that filled with two separate range of colors using illustrator. For the red-bright one, only the saturation is changed, and for the red-dark one, only the brightness is changed. I get the inspiration from Victor Vasarely’s painting ‘Hold-K’.

Blog Post: Color Studies – Ying

In this blog post, I will be documenting and comparing both of my physical color studies and digital studies.

Assignment 1

To be honest, I had no idea about my color choice and it was totally random. I choose brownish-red as my background. I created this color by mixing red and grey. For the rest of the color, I just mix them with the primary color along with grey or any darker color except black. Also, I used a lot of purples as well because it worked quite well with brighter colors. There is absolutely no meaning and symbolism behind this painting.

Assignment 2

In this painting, I was trying to make a landscape. As you can see the green represents the grassland. The yellow represents the landscape and the mountains. The cyan color is the cloud. Lastly, the red represents the sun. I tried to mix them with white to make it brighter but it didn’t turn out as I would expect. I remain the border as white to give the overall painting a contrast element to the whole.

Assignment 3

The first exercise is changing the brightness and I picked black for the center. The red in the first example will make black more stand out and make it seem more bright. While the second example, I picked brown which is a darker color to make it seem dull and dark.

In exercise two, I will be changing the hue while maintaining saturation and brightness. I choose a light purple for both. In the first example, I picked light blue to maintain its neutral look. While the second example, I picked the purple which darker and more saturation. This will make the second example a slightly different color.

In the third exercise, I will be changing the saturation of the color. For the center, I picked orange. In the first example, I picked a dark blue to make the orange more intensive. While the second example, I picked grey to make as little change as possible to the orange.

In the fourth exercise, I will be changing all of the elements that I’ve done before. In this exercise, I picked orange again. The first example, I picked a reddish-orange to make the orange more intensive in darkness and more saturation. The second example, I picked yellow to make the orange more intensive in brightness and less saturation. Since both appear to be a slightly different color, the hue appears different.

The last exercise can be challenging because it required the different colors in the middle but changing the border to make the same color. For the center, I tried not to pick colors that are different drastically. The first color in the left is slightly more greenish and the right is a more orange look. At first, I had no idea what color to pick for the surroundings. I can only figure it out by testing different colors on the color grid. I don’t think this is the best option that I can do because the center color can appear the same without looking at it closely. I guess in the second example the orange-red color will make the yellow-green darker and so closer to the first example.

Assignment 4

In the first sequence, I used colors from green to blue. When the color approach the middle it turned cyan.

In the second sequence, I used colors from red to purple. The color turned slightly pink in the middle.

These two color sequences are complementary but instead of combining them as complementary colors, I match red with green and blue with purple. I think it will make the final sequence more standout and more contrasting look. The red and green reminded me of Christmas color which I really liked.

Assignment 5

For the final assignment, I made a three-dimensional platform with duplicated squares. These individual squares are created with three panels and they are in the sequence of yellow, green, blue, purple and pink. Also, they are from lighter to a darker scheme. I purposely left the top and bottom corner white so there is this illusion that the cube is facing both up and down depending where you start. This is inspired by Victor Vasarely’s artwork called “Ion-11”. In his artwork, he makes the square in many different directions which confuses the audience of its direction. Also, it used brighter colors such as green, yellow, and cyan in the center. The outer corner, he used darker colors to make the center the focal point of the artwork.

Color Studies––Lily

Assignment 1

I chose grayish blue as the background and mixed a little green somewhere. As for the collaged color shapes, I mix bright colors like red and yellow with gay to make it dimmer. I also used purple to make broad hue representation.

Assignment 2

I chose blue which is my favorite color as the background. Then I used bright red and yellow to represent the sun and sunshine in the blue sky, and the muted color green is a tree. However, what I did not do well was that the value range was not broad to present the contrast between chromatic and muted colors.

Assignment 3

This is the assignment I found very interesting and difficult to experiment on the change of colors. I tried several times on the interaction of colors and failed a lot.

(1) This beginning was not too hard. I put a medium gray in the middle and selected lighter and darker backgrounds, to emphasize and reduce the darkness of the central gray respectively so that they appear different brightness.

(2)At first I was confused about how to only alter the hue without changing the brightness and saturation. Then after some failed experiments where either the brightness change or the saturation change was more obvious, I started to ponder. If the central colors only have hue variation as they appear, does it mean the backgrounds should also change the hue only? Then I finally got a satisfying result. Although not very obvious, the purple on the left seems bluer than the right one, but they stay the same brightness and saturation.

(3) I used two opposite colors blue and yellow as the backgrounds. On the left, the blue reduces the saturation of the purple center, whereas the yellow on the right gives more stress on the purple, making its saturation bigger.

(4) I also failed a lot of times on this exercise. The deep green background makes the central light green a bit yellow, as appears on the first screenshot of its similar color. The yellow background makes it greener, appearing similar to the second screenshot. So the central color varies in all the three factors successfully.

(5) I selected scarlet with a little gray as one background. So I thought the central color should be dimmer than usual. Because dim red, as a contrast,  would upgrade the brightness of its central color if it’s brighter than itself. So I used camel which is neither too bright nor too dark. And put a brighter camel within the sky blue surrounding.

Assignment 4

I first made a cold-color styled sequence gradually mixed with warmer colors. I adjusted the colors in the middle with less saturation and value, but added more when the sequence gets to the end.  Also, the reason why I added warm colors is that I want to mix it with my another warm color sequence while the start will have a more contrasting effect with the other sequence.

I also experimented with less change in hue, value and saturation on the right. They are all highly muted colors.

I created the second sequence with all warm colors: red to yellow. And the saturation and value are also gradually decreasing. This is a sunset effect sequence that I really like.

When I mix the two sequences together, it seems to give me the view of sunset on the sea. On the top the sunlight is harmoniously mixed with purple, red and pink. When looking down, you can see darker blue. The yellow at the bottom is stressed by the sea colors. Generally, it presents two kinds of interaction among colors: mixing and contrasting.

Assignment 5

I painted spirals of two kinds of color sequences. One is formed by colors from pink to yellow, and another is formed by colors from pink to purple. When the colored circles accumulate in the center, the colors of two sequence would merge, while on the outside, the colors are distinct. The first sequence of warm color looks like a flower blooming. The colors interact and mix, creating a harmonious picture.

Assignment 5:

In the book, In the World of Perception, Maurice discovers that there’s a distinction between outline and color that classical artists drew the shape of the objects first and then filling them with colors. This makes me rethink about my way of creating all the above works. For me, it is color comes first. I would first decide what color to use and imagine what kinds of spatial form would best express this color and my thoughts. Maurice then brought up ideas of Cezanne that, “the object’s shape, its particular color, its physiognomy and its relation to neighboring objects,” all come together. True. In my contemporary art history class, when I wrote about the painting of Cezanne, the colors and the arrangements of objects in his works are often quite bold and sometimes do not make sense, but full of vividity, which is brilliant. Maurice concluded that our perceptions of artworks are not given but “emerges over time.” In general, Maurice argues from the aspects of science, painting,  and philosophy that people’s perception has changed from classical to modern ones that we are more perceiving the world as a whole rather than separately. In addition, Maurice talks about the spirit is another thing, that we could not see it, but to feel and reflect on them. Other thoughts Maurice talks about include that mind and body are distinct but at the same time united closely with each other.  In the end, Maurice claims that it is impossible to separate things from their way of appearing.

As for my assignments, I feel totally different from making physical color studies to the digital ones. I made assignment one because I love the color orange; however, it is more of a test.  Assignment two is inspired by artist Etel Aden when I visited one of her shows in Serpentine Gallery in 2016 summer. Etel’s work explores the assembly of colors, which is very inspiring seeing how different colors were arranged accordingly in one painting.

As for the digital work 3,4,5, I found it rather challenging for me, cause I am not that familiar with digital languages. And I perceive digital color, which situated in the color bar slower. I feel less connected with them, and therefore, especially work 3 and 4 totally come from experimentations. Assignment 5 is inspired by one of my favorite Korean artists Lee Ufan. He works with monochrome and tries to express the zen idea through his painting with mere brush strokes. And I made this work also in the idea of achieving the minimalist sense.
