This exercise really helps me to understand and exercise the CSS code, which we learned in the week 2. It is really interesting to use CSS in the HTML. I tried to change the color and font. The color and font are relatively easy compared to the other part. I found there were a lot of problems when I was trying to do the layout since I did not realize how to style the whole HTML at first. I went through PPT and read the attributes. And I found out the error in my code. I think this HTML can be improved and I will try to use more style in the next project.

Week 2: Response to “Understanding Comics” by Scott McCloud – Susie

Understanding Comics introduces the basic idea of the comics. The author talks about vocabulary, grammar, and the switch between two panels. In the first four chapters, I found there are a lot of things that I have never cared about before. In Chapter two, the author discusses that different comics have their own styles, which is even related to the painting style in the whole country. In the past, I found that there are a lot of differences between American and Japanese comics. However, I just consider that the differences are just between the character. In Understanding Comics, the author thinks that the Japanese comics have the more detailed and complicated method to make it more realistic. In this chapter, what impressed me most is the big triangle about the characters. On pages 52 and 53, the author lists a big triangle of the different types of comics characters, which can help the readers have a better understanding of it. Week 2: Response to “The Medium is the Message” by Marshall McLuhan – Susie

“The Medium is the Message” by Marshall McLuhan points out a new theory of the medium. The meaningful and useful things are not information and content on the medium but the medium itself. The medium changes people’s relationships with others and people’s living pattern. He takes electric light as an example. Although the electric does not convey the information like the newspaper, it does change people’s life. It is not a communication medium since it doesn’t convey the information, but it is still a medium. So McLuhan understands in a broader aspect. Therefore, the most important “content” is no the content conveyed by the medium but the influence on people’s life that the medium forms and controls.

Nowadays, we can also find the improvement and development of medium changes the different generation’s life. For example, Weibo is very popular in China. It is a medium that brings a large sum of information and message together. On Weibo, people can post video, audio, and articles on it. So people pay more attention to the content. If the things you upload on the internet are attractive enough, you will be followed whoever you are. So as Twitter and Facebook, people nowadays are living in a new life which is quite different from the generation using Blog. Therefore, Weibo is an important medium, which is the message.

Week 2: Response to “Long Live the Web” by Tim Berner-Lee and “The Room Where the Internet Was Born” by Ingrid Burrington – Susie (Yi Shan)

When I am reading “Long Live the Web”, I am thinking about the function of the website in our daily life. The web is very essential in our daily life. According to the author, the web is a public resource that almost all the things in your life depend. What impressed me is the part of “universality is the foundation”. Since people put things on the website, the whole network operates well. And all the things connect with each other by links. When I build my website, I also would like to put a lot of links so that my information will be connected to the boarder platform. In addition, I also learn a lot of base information about the web and internet by the article. The future web lets me think about the future development of the internet. Nowadays, people have developed a lot in open data and social machines. I am looking forward to the development of free bandwidth.

In the second article, it talks about the places that the internet was invented. The author is going to see “The Cloud”. In his article, he describes the history of the computer and the internet. At that time, people developed a new technology called ARPANET, which expanded the principle of time-sharing. From this article, I start to think about how difficult the internet was developed and how people invented the new technology to improve the computer and internet. I am very appreciated that we have advanced time-sharing technology. I cannot imagine how our internet will be like if we don’t have these technologies. As I mentioned in the “Long Live the Web”, universality is the foundation of the website and internet. Only when we can upload our data on the internet can we build the internet. The cloud and ARPANET play the key roles in the development of the internet.
