Concept

Many people, in current society, are under many sources of control, either physically or psychologically. And often, we find ourselves, acting against original wishes, “manipulated” by the outside world, the media, works, surrounding people, etc. Therefore, our project explores the potential to simulate this process with machine learning and a puppet, which is a typical representation of the concept of “control”.

  • Inspiration
wood marionette
wood marionette

Nowadays students/workers are under too much pressure bought by society. A lot of us are acting against our wish, like a marionette from the threads, arms dangling, floating at the mercy of the breeze. Some who tired of being cooped up struggled to free themselves from the control, but finally accepted their fate and submit to the pressure.

  • Interface

A wood marionette placed in the middle of the screen

  • Interaction
    1. Two control bars operating marionettes body segments orientations
    2. Based on the users control, a protest will be given out by the marionette. The effect will be triggered accordingly(e.g. voice, movements, etc.)
    3. Segments will be thrown away in an attempt to get out of control if the instruction is not followed.
    4. The segment will be regenerated with a string that could, again, be controlled by the bars.
  • Machine Learning

KNN classification to recognize the orientation of control bars

MLNI-Innovative Interface with KNN (Wei Wang)

This week, I used KNN classifier to developed the classical snake game based on webcam image matches with pre-recorded gestures with four classifiers. This image match could be further used to involve in other games that requires multiple inputs. This assignment would start with taking four snapshots, each matches one direction (left, right, up and down) that the snake would go. Then the snake game would start, where the user would used gestures to control the movement of the snake.

MLNI – Midterm Project (Wei Wang)

The Concept

For the midterm project, I looked at the concept of social labels. Nowadays, people are overly influenced by the social labels that are passively thrown on themselves. And sometimes even those labels with positive labels would be a burden that push people to shift their behavior in order to match the mode of labels, therefore, have no chance of respite to see the true self.  For this project, I want to enable people to physically get rid of the labels by pushing the texts on the screen with their hand. And once the labels get pushed out of the scree, real figure of the person in front of the camera will show up. I would use Chinese Characters with the meaning of “optimistic”, “pessimistic”, “lazy”,  to get the visual more organized with fixed length of words.
