Final Project Documentation – Oona and Allie (Moon)

This post is a continuation of the last documentation, where I already went over the process of the design of the project as well as the coding process.

For a reminder, the project was based off of the concept of a “dream room”, where we combined aspects of a room we wanted to have when we were kids into one explorable space. The user could click on the clickable object, which would lead to explanations from me or Allie (or both of us) explaining why we included it and what significance it has, if any.

Feedback

Overall, everyone seemed to really love the collage design and the overall aesthetic/ vibe of our project. It was heavily based on the 2000s, as that is the decade in which we grew up, and the collage/hand drawing look they said added to the throwback vibe. I wanted to go for that look because of this, so I was happy to hear this.

The criticism we received was more like suggestions for future development of the project itself. They mentioned possibly adding more layers, or audio/video of us discussing the creation process. They also mentioned adding sound effects or animations to add just a bit more.

Future

In the future, I really like the idea of viewing this as a platform for more to be built off of. In the moment, we wanted to add audio, but because of lack of time and sleep, it was just something my brain couldn’t wrap itself around when coding. I would definitely like to come back to audio and explore the deeper layer suggestion as well.

However, overall I am really proud of my work and what I was able to do. To design something like this and spend hours upon hours coding in the lab to see the final product and hear what everyone had to say made the sleepiness and pain felt in those moments so worthwhile xD

Comm lab was really such an amazing experience, and I’m so glad I was able to learn and create things at this level. ๐Ÿ™‚ and that’s that

For some reason, the link above does not format the site in the same way as it does through atom… (the differences are huge) and I’m not sure why.

idea: our idea was inspired by childhood and how kids like to design their own dream room. we collaborated and created a room based off of our own ideas/ what we wanted our room to look like when we were little.

coding: the coding for this is really simple, but because of the time we had during finals season as well as how our coding ability is not the greatest. nonetheless, it managed to come about!

these are all of the buttons on the home page that link to the pages where we explain why we added the thing in our room/ a person childhood story.

this is what one of the pages the buttons links to looks like!

images: the images were inspired by hand drawing and collage.

overall: i feel like if there was more time, we could have really expanded this project and made it a next kind of level. for what we have now, i definitely feel proud about it. compared to when we first entered comm lab and i didn’t know how to code, or how to even make a site like this, i feel really proud of what i was able to do with this project. comm lab was so amazing! and i’m really excited to major in IMA.

Final Project Proposal – Oona and Allie (Moon)

We had a lot of fun working together on our last audio project, but this time, we wanted to create something that was more meaningful while at the same time learn more about each other throughout the process. As we began discussing project ideas, we talked about our childhoods and that is when ideas started pouring out. We were both inspired by those โ€œdress-up board gamesโ€ that we often used as kids, where we had an outline of a person and could stick on different tops, bottoms, and shoes to make them wear unique outfits.

Our art project concept will be heavily influenced by our childhoods in this aspect. As an example, we intend to pick out different scenes/scenarios from our adolescence and allow the user to interact with them by moving elements from the scene around, changing background music, etc. One concept of a scene we already have in mind is our bedrooms as tweens. We intend to use a mixture of hand-drawn images along with ones found online to recreate furniture, posters, and other elements of our room. The user will be able to use elements from our own childhood and make it their own in a sense.

This also goes back to the idea that internet art, and art in general, is a creation of the artist. It is an impression of themselves, expressed through whatever medium they choose to use! Our project just takes this impression to the next level.

One artist that we both agree gives us some inspiration and has significance in our project is Ben Lewis Giles. He is known for making very interesting collages, which is what we wanted to do in our project! In some way, we want to gather different images (real or hand drawn) and have the user make their own collage in a space. Another more specific inspiration would have to be the games that inspired this project in the first place. The Melissa and Doug Dress Up Board Game is what started it all!

The project will mainly be utilizing collage. We will try to implement a click and drag element so the user can create their own piece using images we have given them. There are more details as well as changes we have to make, but we wanted the user to have an involvement with the work. The reason why we wanted this kind of level of involvement is to simulate the aforementioned games that we had growing up, in hopes that people who come across our art are able to use it and make it their own.

Some suggestions given to us during class feedback were to possibly have an option to allow the user to save their final creation as an image, but we will have to discuss about that. Once we solidify the intention of the project, then we can decide whether or not we want to implement this kind of idea. Before that, we will just keep planning to go forward with this idea, as well as making adjustments based on the time we have as well as the limit of our ability to make the outcome exactly as imagined. Another suggestion would be to have a pop up that appears when the user chooses an item to put in the setting, that explains the significance of that object to us in our childhood. This makes it more personal, but also gives some insight/ reasoning into why we included that particular object in the project.

I hope it goes well! ๐Ÿ˜€

Week 11: “A History of Internet Art” by Rachel Greene Response (Moon)

Overall, I find Internet Art very admirable, especially after reading this article! I love how it was first came to be because of an accidental email glitch (which I didn’t know beforehand) , but gave enough inspiration to spark a movement in the 90s in which people experimented with this new medium of art. I also think that, in a time where the internet was just starting to become a very relevant phenomenon, that trying to navigate these new concepts along with trying to experiment with internet art as a new style was especially difficult. But, it is tremendously admirable because they were able to do just that.

Also, I think it is really interesting to think about the advancement of the internet and technology today, and what that means for internet art. If anything, their canvas expands and grows as we expand the realm of technology and what is possible. Looking at all of the examples of internet art and artists that were sprinkled around this article, I am excited to see how they use these new means of creating art. Also, I am curious to see if this will effect the internet art community. As I understood from the article, there is actually quite a following of internet artists (almost like a fandom for art?). I have never heard of this kind of immense following for any particular artist or style of art, so I’m interested to see what kind of changes will come to the fanbase along with these changes and advancements in regards to the internet itself.

Internet Art Website

LINK:  http://indirect.flights/

This net art website, called “Indirect Flights”,  was created by Joe Hamilton in 2015. It consists of various images of aerial views of places on the globe all collaged together in different ways (from shape to zoom, etc).  I really enjoyed this piece for the aesthetic, as well as its interactivity and how it allowed me to move around the site and see all of the different images Hamilton included!

This is what the site looks like! The images are all very different, going from natural scenes with water and greenery to industrial places with rusty metal and chain-link fences (this contrast is also really cool!)

Hamilton also included an option for certain sites on the website, where the user is directed to if they select one of the options from the menu (pictured above). This is a cool option for people who might want more direction in their exploration!!
