Week2-Respond_to_Understanding-Comics(Clover)

When I read McCloud’s Understanding Comic, it really expanded my understanding of comics. In chapter one, I was really fascinated with the definition of comics. Juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, conveying information to produce the visual or sound response in the viewer. Maybe that’s why we love comic so much. Using simple words to stimulate the senses of the readers. After reading this, I thought of a great comic book I read before. It is Father and Son. This book using simple words or even no word to convey its information. Just by the small changes of the character’s facial expression, we got the what emotion or attitude the writer what to convey. Maybe that’s why we love comic so much, simple but impressive.

Another word attracted me is the word icon. Before I read this book, I thought that icon is used only to describe people. But after I read this I found that icon can be used to represent many other things. Also, I was surprised to find that our lives are full of icons, it has already become a part of our lives. I even imagine in our future we can see the 3D icon in our daily life, walking on the street and be part of our community.

In chapter three what impresses me most is the word the concept of closure, the “phenomenon of observing the parts but perceiving the whole”. This makes me rethink the space between the comic. I found that the space is really important. It can let readers further think what the writer wants to convey in the former picture and have got a clearer understanding of the next picture. This chapter also made me think that also the comic is really simple, every detail does count a lot. Small changes in one picture may result in a completely different feeling of the readers.

I was also deeply fascinated by chapter four. By reading this I understand why word balloons are used in comic. Although our eyes view the panel as a snapshot of a single moment in time, the conversation depicted in the word balloons makes it clear that the events occur over several moments. So although the cartoon is flat, it can still give people a sense of space and time. Also together with the sound effect added to the duration of a panel which strengthens the reader’s feelings.

I got this idea because I found that nowadays I have changed a lot, so I used my own photo. I used the lasso tool to cut my image from the whole photo, then I adjust the brightness and modulus of my image. Because this image means the past so I want it to fade. Then I used the Lasso tool to add another guy(present me) waving to me before. It’s a sign that I have found myself and saying goodbye to my old self. That’s the idea of my work.

Respond to the reading“The Medium is the Message”-Clover

After reading this article, I first found the relationship between medium and message quite interesting. Before I read this article, I never thought about the connection between these two. Medium is the message or medium can have no message. I made me think of if we create a new medium, there maybe will be another new message be created. The new medium can also change the culture or the way of the art. It may also change people’s understanding of art or trend. For example, the VR is a new application of the medium which changing the way people feel about art. VR let people have a more sensory experience to feel about art, so people stay at home can also have the experience of taking roller coaster. So if we create a new medium, we may also create a new message and a new lifestyle. Hoping that in the future people can combine AI and VR, letting people experience a new way of art.

The second thing I noticed is that there are technological and cultural differences between the various groups. There are differences in the perception of the media between illiterate and non-illiterate groups. In a sense, this also means the difference between cultural groups. There are also differences between countries. This cultural difference may because of different history or institutions, which also means that each country can create different forms of artistic expression. Mogao Caves in the east, for example, and the Louvre in the West is a great artistic expression. This historical form of artistic expression is also influencing the form of modern artistic expression. It also means that different groups can better express their culture in different ways. Different Cultures using different modern technologies may yield great artwork.

I was also surprised that the medium can have a really huge impact on society. The article mentioned that print created individualism and nationalism which really surprise me. The media is changing people’s idea and consciousness imperceptibly. From a certain point of view, the media can also control people’s thoughts. The media can even create a new art industry with huge economic effects. Or it can be used to convey a new idea, to usher in a new era. It made me realize the importance of the media. If used well, it will bring good effect, if used poorly, it will bring great harm to society. Therefore, the government should strengthen the supervision of the media and create a good cultural atmosphere.

Respond to the readings(Clover)

The first thing I thought about when I read “Long live the website” was the network security issues that have come up frequently in recent years. The leak of personal information has caused many people to distrust the Internet. Many companies use the Internet inappropriately for business marketing. All of these actions have gradually reduced the status of the Internet in people’s minds. What started as trust turned to loathe. It seems to me that in order to rebuild people’s trust in the Internet, the government should strengthen the management of Internet security. The government should strengthen the protection of personal information, but it should also launch education to teach people how to protect their personal information.

On the Internet gradually into the lives of the public, the advantages of the Internet is also reflected. People share information, share everything, over the Internet. The Internet has provided enormous convenience to human life when meets the question, the Internet also can provide the solution in time. This solves the problem of distance between people. If you don’t go out, you can solve the puzzle. The Internet has also broken the time limit. Being able to log in and use it all the time is one of the advantages of the Internet.

As I read ” A Network of Fragments”, I got a deeper understanding of what the Internet is made of, and I realized that the Internet is made up of fragments, and many times we use pieces of the Internet. It made me realize that many times we can improve the Internet by improving these fragments. You can make a difference with the shards.
