Assignment 2 Week 7

Jinqiao ferry port  has this spectacular view to the Pudong area, but at the same time the opposite side of it represents more industrial, dirty, and clock-like working side of Shanghai. Great view on frequently passing ferries and numerous scooter drivers arriving to the ferry port to cross the river could make up the dynamics of our project and make it look extremely lively in contrast with the still-standing skyscrapers on the background.

Assignment #1 by Aibike

One example I can share:

this screenshot is taken from the video below.

I also wanted to find good recording pieces of Tracey Emin’s performance when she locked herself in a gallery for fourteen days and was drawing one of her works, but the images I found on the internet were insuffiecient for the given assignment.

Bonus: Beatles in a retrospective photo looking to their younger selves.

On Photosynth

After watching the Ted Talk on Photosynth it is now clear for me that we can recreate any 3D object given various 2D images of it. I also highlighted the idea of collective memory,  combining all of the digital knowledge to create unified models of physical places and objects. This digitalization/virtualization of our physical world might be exactly something where the trends are going as humanity’s interests tend to shift from experiencing physical reality to virtual experiences.
I further did a quick research on the authors of Photosynth, and went through some other articles by them. They were all published around 2010, which surprised me much, as this knowledge and its applications exist for 10 years already. It leaves me highly interested in the further applications of Photosynth and its type of technologies in the fields of VR/AR.

Comments on Day 1 Keynote

The aftertaste I got from watching this piece is that Oculus and VR producing companies are invading all areas possible: social networking, entertainment (games, movies), business and customer service, education (surgery trainings and others), etc. The question that arises – are the VR headset producers will be able to cover the demand for their products if the number of users actually satisfy the predicted numbers? At which costs the manufacturing and distribution rates are going to increase?

Also note on the AR glasses that were announced to be in the process of building, exact dates of the release were never mentioned.

Getting read of the hand controllers seems like a solid example of VR gear starting to gradually get rid of everything physical that helps you to get the realest experience. Neural transmitter controllers mentioned, it is inevitable that VR industry will eventually represent more of a lacking physical objects corporations relying on coding and neuroscience.

Announcement of Facebook Reality Maps creates tons of questions on security issues as in the way I understood, the way it works is that all the information from our surroundings is going to be recorded with aim of further reproducing and translation.
