I chose to listen to the “A project of 99% Invisible: Pockets” that talks about the evolution of pocket and the huge difference between man’s pocket and woman’s pocket development.
As for the content, this podcast really offers me an interesting insight into the everyday product. Since most of us have been used to having pockets, we often overlook the details of them, for instance, the different design due to gender difference; also the reason why women are commonly accepted to carry a little bag while men are not. Here the pockets are no longer mere objects, but also as we have learned in Understanding the Comics, an extension consciousness of ourselves. It also functions in social-constructed recognition of the human being: gender, social status, lifestyle… … Another interesting case that has been mentioned is that the connection between true utopia and no-pocket theory. According to this idea, people won’t worry about anything living in the ideal society that guarantees safety. Pockets topic has risen to another stage.
As for the way to deliver this podcast, I’ve found the background music really effective and raise listeners’ mood to keep on concentration, especially when the hostess would like to give a brief introduction or demonstration of a historical event. The emotion of each piece of music also changed with the content: melody turns relaxing when saying something funny; rhythm turns strong when arguing something seriously. Besides, when having conversations, some background noises also help the listeners to imagine the scenes happening on that side. For example, the voice of tearing a plastic bag just matching the conversation topic, which is introducing clothes made of different materials.
