Chengyu Zhang | InterLīmen: A Physical/Virtual Liminal Space in the Datafication Dystopia

InterLīmen is a liminal space interconnecting the virtual and physical dimension for people to relax in the dystopian reality of data flood and digital tracking. By providing a liminal sanctuary with juxtaposed elements, InterLīmen further seeks to empower people to confront the challenges of our data-driven world.

Datafication dystopia refers to a world in which human experiences and activities are increasingly transformed into digital data that is subject to overwhelming surveillance, exploitation, and manipulation. InterLīmen is thus a project that seeks to explore the implications of this dystopian reality by creating a liminal space that interconnects virtual and physical dimensions and provides a sanctuary for relaxation and reflection.
“Līmen”, latin for liminality, is a state of being at the threshold. “Inter”, in latin, means between. The project name InterLīmen thus represents the threshold state in-between virtual and physical, fiction and reality, relaxation and reflection. According to Michel Foucault, a liminal space is an unreal, contradictory space that opposes and compensates the real space.

InterLīmen takes Michel Foucault’s idea to perfectly synchronize the virtual and physical dimensions. Users are projected into the virtual dimension as flat shadows and are further reflected in the physical dimension on monitor screens, extending users’ sensation across dimensions. Moreover, reflective but blurry mirrors are incorporated into the installation to further immerse the users into the state of being in-between the fiction and reality. In both cases, the identities of the users are obscured, boosting the immersion experience but also emphasizing on the exposure of privacy and digital trace in the dystopian datafication world.

A forced and prolonged stagnation in such a surreal state, as analyzed by Michel Foucault, boosts reflection to the reality. In InterLīmen, elements of aesthetical liminal space that relaxes (such as ambient lighting, smooth surfaces and plants) and elements hinting at the datafication dystopia (such as monitors, surveillance cameras, data cables) are used together. Through juxtaposing contrasting elements in the space, InterLīmen produces a passive and not self-explanatory space. However, through extending the users into its virtual and physical dimension, it readily awaits users’ proactive interaction where they interconnect all the elements together, configuring their unique understanding towards the creeping datafication in a supposed relaxed space.

Through its innovative design, InterLīmen aims to empower individuals to confront the challenges of our data-driven world and develop a deeper understanding of the ways in which datafication shapes our lives.

Ziqi Yan | The Breath of Life: New Food Chain: Symbiosis of Humans, Mycelium, and Digital Organisms

The Breath of Life explores the intersection of food technology, human biology, and digital organisms in the technosphere. The installation speculates on a new food chain that brings together humans, mycelium, and digital organisms, creating a unique ecosystem that nourishes all participants.

The Breath of Life is an interactive installation that explores the intersection of food technology, human biology, and digital organisms. The context situates in the technosphere, in which technology becomes the center of nature’s evolution. The installation speculates on a new food chain that brings together humans, mycelium, and digital organisms, creating a unique ecosystem that nourishes all participants.

As a food technology R&D team, The Breath of Life has created a system that analyzes data from human breathing in real time. The communication between each component occurs through wireless communication, another application of the omnipresent technosphere. The humidity from the breath nourishes the other participants in the new food chain. Mycelium, as a prosperous organism on Earth, a developing sustainable material, and a source of human food, becomes the most iconic product of the research team. The digital organism at the center of the installation represents the central position of technology and speculates the inseparable role of technology as a part of the new food chain. The audience can listen to the uplifting advertisement of the new food technology. The Breath of Life represents a new way of thinking about food and sustainability, where humans are no longer at the top of the food chain but are instead part of a mutually beneficial ecosystem.

Through the installation, the artist hopes to spark a dialogue about the future of food and the role that technology can play in shaping it. The Breath of Life invites participants to engage with the system, and to observe and reflect on the interplay between biology and technology. The Breath of Life stimulates contemplation on technology’s impact on the natural world.

The Breath of Life is a thought-provoking and immersive experience that challenges our assumptions about food, sustainability, and the relationship between humans and the environment. The exploration of the potential of technology creates new forms of sustenance and fosters a deeper connection with the natural world.

肉林 [Woods of Flesh] is an alternative ecology constructed with plant-woman hybrid, an organic architecture where the power relationships and body politics between nature and women are distorted via installation, soundscape, and performance. The installation consists of a tufting medium that is interactive and encourages touching, meditation and sound. I want to create a space of empathy and symbiotic. A place where the unseen can be seen, and the silenced can be heard – a principle inspired by an eco-feminist parallel relationships between the exploited nature and oppressed woman. The soundscape is sampled from field recordings and audio stories collected in Tibet, a place where the temporal and spatial relationships between nature and human, birth and death are fused. Pelvis, perhaps the most overlooked secondary sex characteristic, is a key element in this project, widening as a woman grows, tearing when she reproduces, and decaying when she returns to the soil. This “palace” nurtures balance and renewal of a micro ecology inside a woman’s body. By meditating with me and interacting with woods of flesh, you become part of the ecology by altering the soundscape with your body, mind, and motion.

Yuxin Qi | Relaxing Space: A Multi-sensory Experience in Virtual Reality

This project provides a relaxing virtual reality experience that engages users’ multiple senses beyond audio-visual elements. Specifically, it incorporates scents to stimulate the olfactory sense, which is closely associated with the emotional center of the brain.

This project integrates the physical reality with virtual reality to create a relaxing experience for people with scents involved. As more and more people feeling stressed and anxious, there is an increasing need for possible coping strategies. Virtual reality, a new technology that exposes people to a controlled and multi-sensory environment, can positively influence people’s emotional states, among which relaxation is also included. The sense of smell, on the other hand, differs from other forms of human perception by being closely tied to the emotional center of the brain. Therefore, there is a huge potential for the integration of virtual reality and scent to affect people’s emotions. This project’s objective is to generate a multi-sensory experience in Unity by incorporating multiple scents.
The Unity scene is an island setting with natural sounds of sea waves and birds. Since both the senses of smell and hearing are high-precision, the visuals decide to adopt a less-precision style (i.e., less realistic style) to relieve users from being overwhelmed by all these senses involved and also to let users be more focused on the sense of smell in particular. Apart from the island environment, the visual also include unexpected objects that pop up during users’ explorations and the corresponding scents will be emitted so that to make people feel more immersed in the environment. The scents are emitted through scent diffusers with Wi-Fi connections and are controlled through Node Red using MQTT. To speed up people’s reception of the scents, the project also uses fans for faster air circulation.
Through engaging users’ multiple senses, this project would like to go beyond traditional VR projects, which contain mere audiovisual elements. By creating a spatial-temporal space with both VR and smell, this project hopes to generate a higher sense of immersion and a greater change in emotional states.

The Where Do We Go virtual zine explores traditional and digital Palestinian activism. In addition to its zine, this company has a clothing line that combines Palestinian embroidery with digitally coded embroidery to stitch together two types of resistance. Often, Palestinian narratives are hijacked, destroyed, or ignored. Due to physical and mental displacements, there is confusion surrounding the idea of a shared cultural identity.
Palestinian women have been rewriting and establishing their narratives and protesting through tatreez for centuries. Their embroidery expresses resistance to occupation and embraces their own identity. Tatreez has evolved from a design into a social, economic, and political tool. The hobby helped establish a sense of community as many shared it and practiced together. Stitches became a symbol of protest. Today, protests are most common online. The role of digital media activism is highly relevant, not just for Palestinians. The ability to share your narrative through actions such as reposting infographics on your Instagram story or retweeting protests is now possible. However, social media can also be censored and have favored algorithms. Palestinian narratives have been severely restricted on social media platforms such as Instagram.
This project comprises an Instagram-based zine, a website, embroidery samples coded in Processing, and clothing designs. The zine aims to shed light on the present and history of resistance in Palestine while maintaining a strong social media presence. This innovative generation of protest is reflected in Where Do We Go’s clothing, including tatreez and coded embroidery. It is essential to connect traditional and digital forms of activism as tools for resistance rather than comparing and contrasting them. Where Do We Go hopes to raise a collective identity’s voice against silence.
