My research focuses on two main areas: urban studies and media theory. I am well placed to guide projects that aim to explore the social, political, cultural and conceptual issues raised by emerging media. I am also interested in projects that critically engage city life. My own work examines the technological atmosphere of the megacities of contemporary China. I am eager to learn from students who focus on Chinese cyberculture (particularly on the transformative impact of cell phones, data and AI). I am also interested in speculative projects that reimagine the future metropolis.
I have conducted a large research project on street food in Shanghai. Sadly, over the last few years, much of this street commerce and street culture has disappeared. The next phase of this project, therefore, will shift its focus to food delivery apps. It asks how these new delivery systems will reshape the culinary infrastructure of an emerging sentient city. Any students interested in furthering this project through their capstone work would be especially welcome.
