IMA Capstone is a course that allows students to focus independently on a project that integrates the concepts and technical skills learned in courses offered through the IMA programs. Students research, design and create their projects with the guidance and supervision of Faculty Advisors. IMA Capstone takes place over two semesters and requires the completion of two main assignments: a Graduate Research Paper (due in the Fall), and a Practical Media Project (due in the Spring).
Learning Objectives
In Capstone, students embark on independent projects and develop research competencies in their chosen area of study within interactive media arts. This can encompass a wide range of media practices, including but not limited to creative coding, installation arts, video game arts, conceptual arts, performance arts, interactive fashion, physical computing, assistive technology, and other forms of art and design. Alongside their chosen media practice, students are expected to demonstrate an understanding of related historical, philosophical, social, or aesthetic debates and ideas.

Course Policies
Health & Wellness
NYU Shanghai students have at their disposal comprehensive resources and services on health and wellness. The information that can be found on this guide has been compiled in accordance with the Student Life and Health Center regulations and policies.
Attendance and Tardiness
One unexcused absence is permitted. Any unexcused absence after that will count as third of a letter grade off your final grade (A to A-, A-to B+, etc.). 3 unexcused absences will result in failure of the course. If you miss a class it is your responsibility to find out what happened that day in class (i.e. Obtain hand-outs distributed assignments, etc.) Students are expected to arrive to class promptly both at the start of class and after breaks. Arriving more than 10 minutes late or leaving more than 10 minutes early will be considered an unexcused absence
Late Assignment
Assignments are due on the date indicated in the syllabus. Exceptions can be made only with the prior approval of the instructor. Missed presentations and other in class assignments will receive an F. The late penalty for your project proposal is one third of a letter grade per day. So, an ‘A’ proposal that is one day late will be graded an ‘A−’, two days late a ‘B+ ’, three days late a ‘B’, etc.
Academic Honesty/Plagiarism
The presentation of another person’s words, ideas, judgment, images or data as though they were your own, whether intentionally or unintentionally, constitutes an act of plagiarism and will be reported to Academic Affairs. Please find here more information regarding the IMA Capstone Academic Integrity Policies: Capstone Academic Integrity, Generative AI Policy.
Disability Disclosure Statement
Academic accommodations are available for students with disabilities. Please contact the Moses Center for Students with Disabilities (212-998-4980 or mosescsd@nyu.edu) for further information. Students who are requesting academic accommodations are advised to reach out to the Moses Center as early as possible in the semester for assistance.
ARC Services
The Academic Resource Center (ARC) will be offering distance support for students who are enrolled in NYUSH courses until the campus reopens, at which point the ARC will also offer in-person appointments as usual. Students taking classes at another campus/site should also take advantage of academic support resources available at those locations. Students can log on to WCOnline to book an appointment with a Global Writing & Speaking Fellow or a Learning Assistant (LA). The Global Writing & Speaking Fellows will conduct synchronous consultations on writing, speaking, reading, and academic coaching through WCOnline. They will also offer online academic skills workshops to help students adapt to the distance learning model and to develop other academic skills necessary for academic success. LAs will provide distance tutoring support through Zoom, NYU Classes, and email, depending on the nature of each individual course.
