Assignment #5: Campo di Marte
13 November 2024, 14:35
I took the bus from Piazza Dell’Indipendenza to the Campo di Marte station, arriving at 14:47. I decided to start by going to all the art nouveau buildings, as that is what drew me to the area in the first place. Though the buildings were beautiful, I found them difficult to photograph. Most of them were positioned such that they received little to no light, and they were too tall for me to truly do them justice. I did manage to find one that was shorter and got decent light, which I ended up using for this assignment.
After what I considered to be a failed photo trip, I started wandering around the area, noticing the neighborhood itself rather than hunting for a certain form of architecture. I was obsessed with the way the evening light cast shadows on the buildings and attempted to capture that before leaving after sunset.

Once again, I took the bus from Piazza Dell’Indipendenza to Campo di Marte, hoping that the morning light would give a me a new perspective of the area. Then, I went to Le Cure to see a different type of neighborhood. Walking around Le Cure put me in another one of those moments that remind me think of the conversation from Invisible Cities in which Polo tells Khan, “‘Every time I describe a city I am saying something about Venice.” Every time I move through a city, I am always looking at it as though it is San Francisco, seeking features that remind me of home. Having been living abroad for close to three years now, I hardly ever think of myself as homesick anymore, but perhaps this is a newer, more subtle way of experiencing it.
