Assignment #3: Manifattura Tabacchi
I had been to Manifattura Tabacchi prior to this assignment, but never thought of it as a place to photograph. So, when we got this assignment, I knew I had to look at it through a different lens.
Honestly, the day I went was sort of a rough day for me. The world felt dark and cold and the pressure of the impending return of midterms season left me stressed and tired. So, I decided I needed to go outside for fresh air and figured completing this assignment would be the perfect excuse. But when I got there, nothing really felt photo worthy. However, as I continued to wander, the world became warmer. The things that were previously bland transformed into art. I started to notice how the evening light left black and white streaks on every surface, all the while illuminating the paint on every surface. As the world changed, I was finally able to pick up my camera, desperate to capture these moments between light and color.
I continued to wander, watching the world continue to transform as my mood lit up. I was rudely broken out of my tranquil bliss by an eruption of sound, which turned out to be a sound exhibition in the factory.
I ended up spending a lot of time in this room, listening to the sound reverberating through the space. Each time it played, it would shock my nerves, activating my fight or flight. It served as a strange reminder that I am just a visitor that had the pleasure of capturing that place. It reminded me to linger a little longer and to take extra care when photographing, making sure everything was where it belonged.
