Class #2 Reactions: Simmel, Packer, Radio Lab
After listening to the Radio Lab podcast, the analogy of the city as a breathing organism really cling to me. If you step out from human’s perspective and view the city as a whole, the city is really like a living structure with vast neural networks constantly growing in size and efficiency. Infrastructures and services like subways, tunnels, pipes, electric cables, internet connection, gasoline, garbage disposal… everything is interconnected and essential to keep the body alive and the city running. Even a slight decay in any part would infect or injure the organism as a whole. In this case, people become tumors or blood cells driving the whole structure, bringing in energy and consuming energy at the same time with the city’s unique paste.
