Sound Visualization
When beginning work on this project, I initially had another song picked as the basis for it. However, as I was creating my piece and playing around with IIllustrator, I noticed that the visuals I was creating and the song I had chosen didn’t quite match. Nonetheless, I really liked what I had done so far and wanted to preserve and continue working on it. Additionally, starting from scratch and trying to reroute my train of thought would’ve felt like a creative blockade. After careful consideration, I remembered another song I quite liked that encapsulated a feeling that resonated with the visuals I had on my project. I decided to then use this new song as the basis for my project and continue to develop what I had already started.
Here is the song I am using for this project! It is titled Lilacs by Pastel Ghost
When working on my piece, I tried to focus on the feeling of expansion I liked from the song, especially around 2:17. I accomplished this by using two types of rings, one expanding outwards from the center and another surrounding the center, almost like the rings of Saturn. This second type of ring is one I had created in my first iteration of the project when I was still using my first song as a basis. I wanted to maintain this element, as I think it ties in with the piece really well. Additionally, I wanted to capture the “glitchy” noises that the song began with and carried over throughout the rest of the track. The best way I thought of to accomplish this was to use various capital Is and interlink them with one another in order to create an array of interesting connections and patterns. Furthermore, I wanted to incorporate elements that conveyed a sense of “waviness” and “out-worldliness,” which is why I included paths filled with Os in the foreground for the former and a giant C in the center for the latter. This ginormous C, or donut, if you will, is what I believe to be the most essential part of my project as it not only grounds the piece but also guides the viewer from the center to the surroundings, emphasizing the sense of expansion I wanted to create with my work.
Here is my final work!
