Hanwen Hu’s blog about Recitation 2: Arduino Basics

27/9/2022

In our second recitation, we learned more about the Arduino IDE and did some activities with it, it’s quite an interesting recitation and I think I learned a lot from this class.

Step 1: Fade

In step 1 I successfully built the circuit quickly with the help of guidelines, since I learned something about Arduino before, this step is not hard for me. I just put LED, resistor, and wires rightly on the breadboard, and it works. However, to built a circuit all by myself still made me feel really excited.

Step 2: toneMelody

ToneMelody requires more skills than the step one, yet it still not pretty hard since it’s circuit have some kind of similarities to the circuit in step one, after I made the buzzer in the right place, the circuit soon be completed.

Step 3:Speed Game

I work together with Haowei (hd2420) in this step, it take us a while to built the circuit since it is much complicated than the former steps, and the problems came out that when we finish out circuit, it doesn’t work! We checked out wires again and again but they do in the right place, finally we ask our professor also teaching assistants, finally we found the the issue happened because our Arduino program lost an important part, after we fixed the program, it goes well, and we’re happy to see that.

This is my schematic of step 3.

In all, I’m so excited to be able to work in the recitation and learned more about the Arduino, it really makes me happy.

Answers to the 3 questions:

1.I think there could be another button besides each origin button, which used for stop you rival, if you push this button, your rival will receive a minus 1 in his or hers record, this will make you have to choose whether to add more to yourself or stop your opposite, and that will made this game more competitive, which will also made it more interesting.

2.Large resistors protect current readings from external influences, so that the result will be more accurate and the game are fair.

3.The project I chose is a Smart Trashbin, I choose it because first it was built mostly by things we are easy to get or already have, what’s more, it is really useful in our daily life, and it was made by collaborate, I do think this is an interesting project.

1. The Veldt:

In Ray Bradbury’s The Veldt, there exists an intelligence nursery that can help in raising children in virtual reality, in the article, there is a problem with this education method, which leads to the distortion of the child’s heart and eventually kills the parents, however, I think virtual reality can play a great role when combined with real-life education. I imagine a VR instrument that can simulate relevant scenes according to requirements, and it can help students experience some real-life situations according to relevant requirements. It is difficult to find even more dangerous scenarios in chemistry, such as simulated laboratories for chemistry and simulated landforms for geography. This technology is actually not far away, technologies such as virtual agriculture have already appeared in real life, and such products can be expected in the foreseeable future.

However, this technology may also be used in bad ways such as terrifying people,or if we use VR to teach student to get away from dangerous things, they may disbelieve about those danger since there’s no real danger in the VR world.

2.The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas

In this fiction, the concept of a flowing light source attracted me. Although it is not described in the novel, I think that if there is a light source that senses people’s movements and the external environment and adjusts the light accordingly, it will make life interesting and much more convenient. And now there have been infrared-sensing lights, which will choose whether to light up according to the distance and time of the person. If this technology is combined with a more artistic light source transformation, then the technology I imagined should not be too difficult to achieve.

3.The Plague

This article is more like a love story, which is also in line with Yan Leisheng’s consistent style – explaining science fiction stories with delicate humanities and emotions, and the sculptures in the article are still “alive” because they are still “alive”, which makes me Think of the new possibilities of sculpture art – if an artificial electronic nervous system and a metal skeleton are implanted in the sculpture, so that it can truly “move slowly”, then a sculpture will have many possibilities. And this technology has actually been applied to most of the robots.

However,it may also cause some problems that this sculpture may lose control and do harm to people or places where they are.

I think interactive media needs to reflect the interaction between humans and machines, or the media can actually show the impact or response on people. For example, Tom Loge mentioned in Making Interactive Art: Set the Stage, Then Shut Up and Listen: Let the audience “Figure out how to suggest to them what their course of action could be, and how they might uncover their story and their own emotional interpretation of the work.” And the process of audience search is an interaction, in which the audience will be influenced by the machine and will also influence the machine.

The first one I choose is Sisyphus-Construction, Deconstruction, Power, and Resistance from CreativeApplications.Net. I believe this project suits my definition of “interactive” because in this project, the giant machine is constantly destroying the structure, however, once when the structure is destroyed, small robots continue to build new structures, thus demonstrating collective resistance through individual actions. These actions resist the sheer power of the giant robot. The enduring resistance of the small robot makes all efforts worthwhile, not “futile”. Thus, Sisyphus symbolizes not only the confrontation of power and resistance, but also the hope brought about by the possibility of change. And that obviously shows a spirit of resist the oppressor and destroyer, which will affect the audience.

The second project I choose is RE:PLACES-Liebl and Schmid-Pfahler,also from the CreativeApplications.Net. I think this project didn’t suits my opinion well since it is used to “creates a variety of intertwined forms with glassy surfaces and fascinating transitions in hue—material qualities not usually associated with plastic. “It seems like an application of waste plastic, but it’s hard to see how the machine will react to people, it’s more of an automated eco-friendly idea than a human-computer interaction application.

In all, I believed that “Interaction” should be defined as a kind of “exposure to Impact and Learning.”and just like everything else people encounter in life, interactive media should not be taken too far from reality.

This blog is written for the work requirement in our recitation class.

Exp: In the recitation class, I’m in the same group with Richy Zhuang (rz2610) so we’re using the same videos.

This is our Stage 1, it actually kind of easy to understand once we figure out how the electric route goes and we did it successsfully.

In Stage 2 we met some problems since we made a mistake in connecting wires, which result in short circuit, but with the help of professor we successfully handle it and works it out.

In Stage 3 we tried two methods-with a switch and without it, both worked, yet it ensured us about the essential role switch played in the circuit, without the switch, it could be really inconvenient to control the circuit since you’ll have to operate on the power supply.

This Recitation was an interesting experience for me, I rarely had the opportunity to build circuits in high school, and this hands-on experience taught me a lot. Thanks to Prof. Gottfried and Prof. Rudi, as well as the teaching assistants, who helped me overcome some of the problems I encountered such as how building the circuit rightfully.
