Visual Metaphor Proposal

III. Concept | Storyline

The major concept of our visual metaphor is about a person’s self-examination and disillusionment. Our narrative voice over originates from two books, one is Schoolgirl（《女生徒》）, a book written by DAZAI Osamu, this book is based on the diaries sent by his readers. It describes the female students’ feelings about their surroundings and their criticism of their own state of mind during the day. And another is No More Than Skins (《皮囊》), which is written by Chinese author Chongda Cai. The book tells about the local customs and changes of the times in a fishing town in Fujian named Dongshi, and records the warm and cruel story between the author and his hometown, family and friends. 

The content we chose mainly describes a girl’s thinking and reflection on her own way of reading. Our storyline is basically about the process of her awakening, in which this girl realized that all she did when reading books was take the ideas out of the book and use them directly in her daily life. After the failure of this “transport” move in reality, she realized the importance of knowing and accepting her true self.

But is this girl really awake? This is a question worth exploring…..

The style/aesthetics we are going to pursue is the style of stream of consciousness. In our works, the psychological descriptions and various behaviors of the protagonists include not only the conscious consciousness, but also the unconscious or dream consciousness.

IV.  Execution Plan:

Since both of us have cameras and mobile phones with us, we will utilize both of them, but we will concentrate more on the use of cameras since cameras enable us to change our lens easily and the quality of each frame will be much clearer than the one that is shot by phones.

Also, because we are being locked down in our dorms, we will shoot most of our scenes in our dorms, but we will also take advantage of the videos that we have taken before. And we will shoot our scenes mostly in day time because the lighting conditions will be better than at night.

Our challenges will be how to find our properties such as oranges, playing cards, etc. We also meet the problem that it is difficult for us to gather together to shoot our video, and we might have to be separated into two parts and shoot individually. We will prepare our properties in advance and make sure the scene that we want to shoot is shootable.
