If you will be studying away outside of Shanghai in Spring 2018, please follow the steps below for course registration and read carefully all the information provided here.
For All Students:
For Students Going to New York:
1. Course Intent Form
All students studying away from Shanghai during the Spring 2018 semester are required to complete the Spring 2018 Course Intent Form. The priority deadline for this form is Wednesday, October 25th, 2017 at 5:00pm (Shanghai Time).
As you are completing the Course Intent Form, place your selected courses in your Albert shopping cart and attempt to validate them. Attempting to validate your courses now will allow us to address registration problems ahead of time. If you do not take the time to validate courses, we will not know ahead of time if there are issues with your registration. (See how to validate courses here). If your selected courses do not validate, indicate the reason they did not validate as indicated by Albert on your Course Intent Form. Please note that only courses that did not validate will be reviewed to determine if permission codes are needed. Make sure to validate every course!
The Global Affairs Office will follow up and review your eligibility to take the course and if any permission codes are needed will communicate with the relevant department in New York or Abu Dhabi for processing. Please do not reach out to any Global Site or department in New York or Abu Dhabi about enrollment into specific courses until or unless you are specifically instructed to do so.
It is important to accurately complete this form because it will notify the Advising team and the Global Affairs team to follow-up on courses for which you may need a special registration permission code. For example, you may need help registering for classes that have prerequisites with different course codes than the classes offered in Shanghai. Please keep in mind that there are many other reasons why follow-up may be needed before registration. This is a complicated process that will take time, so it is important that you plan early. Changes made after 5:00 pm, Wednesday, October 25th, 2017 (Shanghai Time) will result in a delay in getting any needed permission codes prior to registration.

2. Permission Codes & Error Messages
Many courses that do not validate in Albert will require permission codes for registration. These requests are reviewed as part of the Course Intent Form that you will all need to submit prior to registration. On the form you will need to indicate, for each course, whether it validates or not. Please be sure that this information is correct when submitting the form because we will only be reviewing those courses that DO NOT validate for permission codes.
There are a few validation errors messages that will not require permission codes and those are:
“There is a time conflict for this class…”
“Term unit maximum would be exceeded.”
“This class requires instructor consent.”
Students will need to contact instructor directly ONLY for courses that indicate they require instructor consent. For the other two errors, this is most likely occurring because you are validating too many courses or all of the courses in your shopping cart instead of selecting specific ones for your ideal schedule. These errors will not necessarily prevent you from enrolling in these course but you should pay very close attention to any possible time conflicts and make sure you are only enrolling in up to 18 credits.

4. For Students Going to New York: Open Access List for Stern Courses
The Spring 2018 Stern Open Access List will be available soon on the Non-Stern Student website. This list contains all of the courses that Shanghai students would be eligible to take while studying in New York for the fall semester. Not all Stern courses are open to non-Stern students (including Shanghai Business majors) so it is important to review this list closely while planning for fall registration. Please pay special attention to the sections listed and the prerequisites for each of the courses. You would only be permitted to enroll in the courses (and specific sections) listed on the sheet and must meet all prerequisites associated with the course. As long as you meet the prerequisites these courses should validate properly in your shopping cart but you will not be able to enroll until the Open Access date indicated occurs. In the meantime you will want to waitlist yourself for the course, when your registration time comes, and set up a swap with another course you are able to enroll in.
5. For Students Going to New York: Departmental Registration Procedures
On the New York campus, some departments have special instructions for registration into their courses. Please carefully review the New York Registration Procedures document when planning your Spring 2018 class schedule and pay close attention to the departments that house your intended courses.
