Student Testimonials

Caiyi-Li“Majoring in mathematics as an undergraduate widens my major choices for graduate school. I have not decided on my future career plan yet and the undergraduate years would be the best time for me to explore my interests. However, following the honors math track is anything but easy. The honors math courses would explain many relevant ideas, in particular many rigorous proofs, and how the theorems are established. The process from the definition to the theorem and then to the proof has really changed my worldview. It is fascinating to understand the spirit behind the proofs and how all the theorems work. (although I do not really understand sometimes.) It is also wonderful to be working with many great professors and a group of excellent classmates who are taking the same challenge as me. ” – Caiyi Li, Class of 2018

Xi, Jiaqi(Helen)

“I had intended to major in finance but gradually I realized that that maybe not my “Mr.Right”. In the first semester of freshman year, besides mandatory courses (GPS and EAP), the other two courses I took were both in Honors Maths track. I had gone through a hard time adjusting my mindset to maths study and also hesitated over questions like “should a girl take maths as major?”. However, finally it turns out that although I still don’t know whether I can do well in maths, I find it fascinating and, honestly, useful in countless fields. So why not just try it?” – Jiaqi Xi, Class of 2019, Fall 2016 Peer Advisor

Degree Requirements – 2017-18 Bulletin

* = offered in Spring ’18 in Shanghai

NOTE: The requirements below are from the online version of the 2017-2018 bulletin. Please refer to the Registrar’s All Majors Degree Requirements if you are following a different major version.
To graduate with an Honors Mathematics degree, students have to maintain a cumulative and major GPA of 3.65. If they fail to do so, they may graduate as mathematics majors but retain the Honors designation of the individual courses they took on their transcripts. The earliest students are able to declare the major is after completion of Honors Analysis I and Honors Linear Algebra II and posting of their Spring semester freshman year grades.

REQUIRED MAJOR COURSES: All 8 courses below
Note that MATH-SHU 265 Linear Algebra and Differential Equations can’t substitute MATH-SHU 140 Linear Algebra. For any course that requires Linear Algebra as the pre-req, students have to meet the pre-req by taking Linear Algebra.
