The Sensory Resources Guide For Museums will help museums implement accessibility resources to combat overstimulating environments to make them more widely accessible to all visitors. The goal of this project is to standardize what information should be available in museums for visitors sensitive to sensory overstimulation.
At the moment, this site offers information about three sensory resources: sensory kit, sensory guide, and social narrative. We also include templates of a sensory guide and social narrative to help museum professionals develop their own. The guide currently focuses on making museum experiences more meaningful and enjoyable for people who are sensitive to sensory stimulation such as autistic people and people who are impacted by sensory stimuli like light, noise, smell, and touch.
This project is through the NYU Ability Project and will offer concrete strategies to increase visitor engagement at museums and historic sites to support visitors with a wide range of physical, sensory, cognitive or behavioral abilities.
