WHO Launches the Preparedness and Resilience for Emerging Threats (PRET) Initiative

The Preparedness and Resilience for Emerging Threats initiative (PRET), was created by the WHO to prepare for and prevent future pandemics. PRET will allow nations to ensure they have the capacities to manage potential threats and increase response and recovery. From April 24th to 26th, the WHO will host a global meeting to “usher in the new era of pandemic preparedness”. The initiative will serve as a call to action for most nations as they must prepare and prevent what may come upon them in the future.

The WHO stated that “PRET focuses on improving pandemic preparedness for groups of pathogens based on their mode of transmission.” The initiative’s aim is to further strengthen and improve the capabilities of systems already in place for most nations. PRET strengthens pandemic preparedness for groups of pathogens in line with WHO resolutions.

The resolutions allow the WHO to provide technical guidance and strengthen the pandemic response. PRET is currently operating under the guidelines of the International Health Regulations (IHR). The IHR assists countries in detecting and responding effectively during crises. PRET and the WHO encourage countries to develop “national action plans for health security.” This is done in part to strengthen capacities for all forms of health-related disaster preparedness. PRET and the WHO are committed to providing the necessary resources to nations as they continue to work towards preventing and combating future crises.
