Syed Ali Husain’s Mitigation Strategies Brief on the Great East Japan Earthquake

The Great East Japan Earthquake (GEJE) is a devastating disaster that took place on March 11, 2011 off the coast of Honshu Island. A magnitude 9.0 earthquake was consequently followed by a series of other disastrous events, including a tsunami and a nuclear incident. In the aftermaths of the disaster, recovery in affected regions was negatively impacted by inadequate water supply. Local officials have made great efforts to improve the region’s water supply system since the disaster.

Thomas O’Neill’s Case Study on the 1986 Chernobyl Power Plant Disaster

A reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Pripyat, Ukraine exploded on April 26, 1986. Two plant workers died as the disaster took place, followed by the death of twenty-eight more individuals in the next few weeks, all of whom were involved in local disaster response efforts. In the next few years, more than 6,000 children suffered from thyroid cancer. The disaster also resulted in the evacuation of 220,000 inhabitants in Pripyat for unsafe habitability.

IAEA Task Force’s Efforts to Safely Discharge Treated Water from Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station

In January 2023, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Task Force completed a regulatory review of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (NPS) in Japan for discharging treated water at the NPS from the 2011 nuclear disaster.
