A large portion of the population the Southern Nevada Health District serves are from Clark County. With an increase in active shooter events throughout the United States in the past few years, it is critical to prepare to protect students and employees within Clark County School District for potential active shooter events.

Iman Yusuf’s Case Study on Malaysia Airlines Flight 17

In this case study, Yusuf reports on Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, shot down by a missile attack in 2014 in eastern Ukraine as it traveled from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. Yusuf discusses the investigation of Flight 17’s crash, which had zero survivors, and the role played by international political relations in public health disaster management and response.

The War in Ukraine: A Public Health Crisis

The World Health Organization (WHO) has verified over 1000 attacks on healthcare in Ukraine since the invasion by the Russian Federation in February of last year. This is the highest number of attacks on a healthcare system ever reported by the WHO in any humanitarian emergency. This strain on the Ukrainian healthcare system makes it much more challenging to provide routine and emergency healthcare services. The attacks on the healthcare system have hindered access to healthcare for tens of thousands of people in Ukraine, thereby increasing the risk of illness and death.

Gina de la Chesnaye, Nelia Ekeji, Priya Nagireddy, and Prophète Yemima’s Risk Reduction and Management Strategies Surrounding Mental Health Crises Stemming from Continuous & Multiple Disasters

In Karamoja Region in northeast Uganda, more than 61% of the population are living in poverty. Flood, drought, famine, armed conflicts, and the consequences of climate change all contribute negatively to the food insecurity crisis in the region, which caused 2,465 fatalities in 2022. Considering the mental health impact of ongoing and concurrent disasters in the affected areas, the group has created a disaster plan to raise mental health awareness and to engage local communities in Karamoja, Uganda.
