Lawrence Odala Mfutso’s Case Study on Cyclone Freddy

People recovering from the impacts of Cyclone Freddy.

Tropical Cyclone Freddy struck Malawi in March 2023, causing over 676 deaths, displacing thousands, and exacerbating a cholera outbreak. The cyclone resulted in infrastructure damage totaling an estimated $506.7 million.

Mfutso provides commentary on how the quick response time of emergency medical teams both in Malawi and abroad helped to curb both injuries from the cyclone and cholera prevalence. However, despite these initiatives, misinformation and inadequate warning systems resulted in delays and difficulties in mobilization, according to the author.
