In April 2022, a mass shooting occurred on a subway in New York City. Gunman Frank R. James threw smoke grenades and opened fire with a handgun on a northbound N train in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Twenty-nine people were injured with no life-threatening injuries.
In this case study presentation, Mathers describes the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (MTA) and New York police officers’ response and management of the event. The attack was a statistical rarity for the NYC subway system, yet highlighted the necessity for quick emergency response throughout the city. Mathers emphasizes the importance of training for MTA employees in disaster response protocol in the event of a future attack.
