With the occurrence of a catastrophic disaster, it can be immensely difficult for healthcare systems to manage an acute and large influx of patients. During these acutely stressful periods, specialized efforts are required to keep up with the demand of space, resources, and healthcare professionals that can tend to the patients. In urban settings with high population densities, it is imperative to analyze how healthcare workers can respond to catastrophic events when there are discrepancies in staff availability.

Dr. Denis Nash Writes a Commentary on CDC’s Response to Omicron

Dr. Nash analyzes the effectiveness of the CDC’s new guidance for people infected with SARS-CoV2. The new guidelines state that the isolation period should be shortened from 10 days to 5 days, and there isn’t a requirement to test negative before returning to work. This change of policy was based on outdated data, stated Dr. Nash, and the few studies suggesting how to proceed are informal.

NYU’s Dr. Robyn Gershon and Team Awarded Grant to Study COVID Impact on Essential Transit Workers

A renowned NYU clinical Professor of epidemiology, Dr. Robyn Gershon, and her team were awarded a four million dollar grant from the National Institutes of Health to study the impact of COVID-19 on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) transit workers.

Testing Inoculation Videos Against Misinformation

Dr. Rachael Piltch-Loeb et al publishes a study in pre-print that utilizes known anti-vaccination narratives to develop 30 second videos that discuss vaccine misinformation. The pre post study proposes to test the attitudes of the unvaccinated participants, compared to a control group, on three videos with different messages; using a rhetoric and narrative approach, a factual rebuttal, or a hybrid of the two.

Post-traumatic stress resilience in World Trade Center survivors

A mixed-methods study utilized data from the World Trade Center Evacuation Study and recruited 29 survivors to self-report symptoms of PTSD using the PTSD checklist-civilian scale (PCL-C) and undergo semi-structured interviews. A thematic analysis identified 5 protective factors that represented resilience and 8 risk factors that influenced the likelihood of developing PTSD symptoms amongst this cohort.
