Mentalla Abbas, Marissa Sogluizzo, and Ashlynn McCool Create a Flooding Response and Evacuation Plan for Basement Apartments

In September 2021, Hurricane Ida resulted in the flooding of many basement dwellings and the death of 13 people. NYU students have identified the vulnerability of illegal residences and the lack of adherence to emergency preparedness measures against flooding. Their plan proposes to mitigate the deaths, injuries and displacement of tenants in New York City basement and cellar apartments that may occur after major flooding events.

Cynthia Martinez and Kadija Ceesay’s Tornado Response Plan for Hunter College

NYC experiences tornadoes season from April 1 to Nov 30 and, historically, these events cause severe damage to property due to the strong winds and flooding that occurs.  Hunter College is located in heart of Manhattan making it necessary for it to have a functional evacuation and response plan in place in case of a tornado event.

Daliya AlMohammad Ali, Juhi Chandnani, and Eleni Kokolakis’ Disaster Plan on Flooding in Coastal Zones of Washington

Flooding is a frequent and costly disaster event in the State of Washington. The rise of sea levels has impacted the lives and livelihoods of the people in the coastal zones, thus further widening gaps in disparities among vulnerable populations. Many tribes live within these zones and may face disproportionate impacts of disasters due to the racial inequities, pre-existing health problems stemming from healthcare inequities, homelessness, etc.

Katrina Paleologos, Sarah Bacher, and Ambar Navedo Mendez’s Wildfire Disaster Plan For the City of South Lake Tahoe

Three NYU GPH students develop a wildfire disaster plan for local officials to protect and preserve the population and watershed environment of Lake Tahoe. They utilize local resources such as the Emergency Operations Center of South Lake Tahoe, Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, and the fire department and establish a communications network with the federal level and other mutual aid agencies.

Jessica Gets, Elizabeth Glines and Justine Deacon’s Hurricane Disaster Plan for the Rand Memorial Hospital in the Bahamas

The devastating impacts of Hurricane Dorian on the Bahamas in 2019 inspired NYU students Jessica Gets, Elizabeth Glines and Justine Deacon to create a plan to prepare hospitals for future hurricane threats in the area and to improve their response capabilities.  It outlines protocols and procedures to follow such as a communications plan, concept of operations (CONOPS), and more.

Chelsea Gibson and Folashade Olatunji’s Disaster Plan on Oceanview Nursing & Rehabilitation Center

A nursing home in Far Rockaway, NY is in close proximity to Rockaway Beach, thus vulnerable to flooding and hurricanes.  NYU students Chelsea Gibson and Folashade Olatunji have developed a disaster plan which can be used to enhance resiliency in other nursing homes with similar vulnerabilities.

Bethlehem Tesfaye & Carly Malburg’s Disaster Plan on Influenza Virus Outbreak and Response

Since it is currently flu season, which is from October to March, NYU public health disaster students Bethlehem Tesfaye and Carly Malburg have developed a plan focused on the Northern Virginian INOVA health network where the population represented is one of the most negatively impacted by influenza.
