The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene oversees all five NYC boroughs, serving as a public health system for COVID-19 prevention and control. Since COVID-19 disproportionately affects communities of color, individuals with health disparities, and essential workers a group of NYU students have developed a plan that implements the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine’s five-phase tiered strategy to distribute the COVID-19 vaccination equitably among the vulnerable populations.

Flooding is very prevalent in Karachi, Pakistan, due to dam malfunctions, broken glacial lakes, or heavy monsoon rains. Poor infrastructure and sewage systems further aggravate the issue. The National Disaster Management Authority (NMDA) of Pakistan coordinates responses to threatening disasters and the NYU students have developed a plan to partner the NMDA with the Orangi Pilot Project.

Evacuation of long-term care facilities is further complicated by the pandemic; shelters are required to house a large number of individuals during the event of a disaster but the risk of overcrowding and the difficulty of implementing adequate social distancing can promote the spread of SARS-CoV-2.

In the Morris Hills Regional District, efforts were made to protect the health of public school students with new strategies that reduced the risk of COVID-19 transmission. Homer and Methyl designed a Restart and Recovery Plan that reevaluates any potential gaps to promote the best approaches to COVID-19 response and recovery; their targeted plan focuses on policy, funding, peak learning conditions, and many other principles that improve the health and safety of the students.
