David Ray Garcia

David Garcia is a family nurse practitioner in the Nursing PhD program at NYU and his dissertation proposal focuses on secondary data analysis on young men who have sex with men, framed by the syndemics theory, to examine substance use, violence, and HIV/AIDS risk.  After a study abroad class at NYU London on HIV/AIDS, David became inspired by his potential contributions to this field of research.

Cat Hartwell & Rob Torino’s Hurricane Evacuation of a Palm Beach Skilled Nursing Facility During the Pandemic

Severe storms, floods, and hurricanes are very common in coastal areas such as South Florida. Evacuation of long-term care facilities is further complicated by the pandemic; shelters are required to house a large number of individuals during the event of a disaster but the risk of overcrowding and the difficulty of implementing adequate social distancing can promote the spread of SARS-CoV-2.

Homer Edward Wanamaker & Methyl Grace Barro’s COVID-19 Restart and Recovery Plan

In the Morris Hills Regional District,  efforts were made to protect the health of public school students with new strategies that reduced the risk of COVID-19 transmission. Homer and Methyl designed a Restart and Recovery Plan that reevaluates any potential gaps to promote the best approaches to COVID-19 response and recovery; their targeted plan focuses on policy, funding, peak learning conditions, and many other principles that improve the health and safety of the students.

Reyna Bhandari, Eric Rochman and John Vasilios Andreo’s Plan for Contact Tracing Immigrant Populations

Contact tracing programs in New York City aim to identify and monitor confirmed cases of COVID-19 infections. The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the New York City Health and Hospitals Test and Trace Corps collaborate to aid immigrant populations by supporting those infected with the virus through communication and outreach.

Jamillah J. Williams & Christine Phyathep’s COVID- 19 Risk Mitigation in Dialysis Patients

Research has shown that dialysis patients are at a greater risk for COVID-19, often facing a longer recovery process and more frequent hospital visits. They have increased vulnerability due to weaker immune systems and an increased risk of exposure in hospitals and when taking public transportation.

Whitney Collado and Madeline Navarro’s Management Plans for Mass Fatalities in NYU Langone

New York City has experienced a number of mass casualties, from the severe effects of climate change to the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Due to its massive population, mass casualties are hard to manage especially in the fatality management department. Human remains become difficult to preserve and public messages are tough to communicate.

Indian Ocean Tsunami 2004

The Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia was one of the most deadly disasters in history. The megathrust earthquake had a magnitude of 9.1, and its immense strength caused a tsunami on the coastlines. Killing a total of 230,000 people in Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and South Africa, the after effects of this disaster demanded the development of new initiatives for disaster risk reduction, earthquake sensors, possible volcano sensors, and increased global cooperation in times of need.
