Mongolia Reviews New Pandemic Response Strategies Amid Covid-19 Outbreak

In preparation for the next pandemic, Mongolia underwent an extensive revision process to their current emergency response and preparedness plan. Mongolia conducted an extensive review and simulation exercise, mimicking an avian influenza outbreak, to determine the methods to alleviate stressors in the event of an outbreak. This call to action arose following identification of needed improvements as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Large-Scale Search and Rescue Missions Underway Amidst Extreme Flooding in South Korea

President Yoon Suk Yeol of South Korea has orchestrated a large-scale search and rescue-mission in response to fatal flooding caused by torrential downpours. In the midst of an annual monsoon season, South Korea has been hit with widespread flooding since July 9th, causing massive landslides, flash floods, and electricity outages for weeks. As the rain continue, the number of displaced people is estimated at 10,570 and counting.

Katriel Bush, Kristen Smith, and Catrina Turk’s Emergency Operations Plan for Waterborne Illnesses Among Health Clinics in Southern California

Katriel Bush, Kristen Smith, and Catrina Turk created a public health plan to address the prevalence of waterborne illnesses within the Native American community in Southern California. The proportion of affected individuals with waterborne illnesses is statistically higher in Native American populations than in other racial groups. In this plan, Southern California was chosen due to the higher distribution of Native American individuals across the southern cities compared to the Northern California region, leading to a heightened risk of waterborne illnesses within the region.

Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Demand Action in Response to Increasing Noncommunicable Disease (NCDs) and Mental Health Mortality Rates

The 2023 Bridgetown Declaration on Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) and Mental Health was introduced on June 15 with the purpose of mitigating poor outcomes from deadly diseases in Small Island Developing States (SIDS). NCDs are non-infectious conditions which typically result in long-term care and treatmentaccounting for 74% of all deaths globally. SIDS are disproportionately impacted by NCDs, with more than half of SIDS at a 30% risk of premature death caused by cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, or chronic respiratory disease.

Emergency Medicine and Disaster Response Around the Globe as Told by a Doctor

Harvard physician Morgan Broccoli discusses her experiences as an emergency humanitarian work responder in a number of disaster settings around the globe. In 2021, Broccoli joined Team Rubicon, a nonprofit disaster relief organization, as an aid to a double disaster in Haiti. This experience would become the first of many disaster response missions for Broccoli.
