Heather Yu analyzed the 2014-15 Shigella outbreak and its relevance to discussions in drug resistance. Shigella is a common bacterial infection that affects about 450,000 people annually in the US. Out of the infected population, 17% are drug resistant. The risk associated with multi-drug resistant (MDR) Shigella can not be underestimated, as 6% of all strains are resistant to ciprofloxacin, the most common treatment method for the disease.

IAEA Task Force’s Efforts to Safely Discharge Treated Water from Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station

In January 2023, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Task Force completed a regulatory review of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (NPS) in Japan for discharging treated water at the NPS from the 2011 nuclear disaster.

Sophia Zuniga’s Case Study on 2018 Parkland Shooting

On Feb 14, 2018, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz opened fire inside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL, killing 17 and wounding 17 people. According to Sophia Zuniga’s case study, the gunman purchased the gun a year ago before the shooting. He was expelled from the school five months ago. Within 7 minutes, he entered and exited the school while police entered after he left.

Corrinne Joseph Tendo’s Case Study on the 2021 Extreme Heat Events in British Columbia, Canada

From June 25th to July 1st, 2021, a heat dome struck the province of British Columbia, Canada, causing record-high temperatures over consecutive days. The temperature peaked on June 29th, reaching a high of 49.6 Celcius. Corrinne Joseph Tendo discusses the epidemiological outcomes of this event in her case study.
