Daneau’s case study provides an overview of the extreme heat waves in Phoenix, Arizona between 2012 and 2022. During this period, more than 3,200 individuals died from heat-related complications.
Daneau first analyzes the events from an epidemiological perspective, then presents state officials’ efforts and the measures taken to manage the disaster’s impact. Notably, the Arizona Department of Health Services distributed bilingual brochures titled “It’s Hot Outside”, which included important information on identifying signs of heat exhaustion and what should be done in these situations to prevent severe medical complications form occurring.
