In this mitigation plan, Gina de la Chesnaye, Nelia Ekeji, Yemima Prophete, and Priya Nagreddy present two training exercises to mitigate the impact of food insecurity in Karamoja and the mental health stress associated with disasters.
The first exercise titled “Food Security Early Warning Exercises” is explained in three sections: objectives, audience, and expectations. This exercise will help local communities to develop feedback-based response plans and will encourage participants to gain skills and knowledge in using the Food Security Climate Resilience Facility (FSCRF) efficiently in order to respond effectively in the event of a food crisis. The second exercise is titled “Psychological First Aid for Disaster Responders and Survivors”. As disaster responders and survivors can suffer from extreme stress, distress, and trauma, the group proposed the implementation of mindfulness-based stress reduction strategies to help lessen the negative psychological effects caused by a traumatic event.
