The Billion Oyster Project aims to clean, cure, and build a reef of leftover oysters that will protect New York City from floods and erosion.
Oyster reefs once played a big role in protecting New York City’s coastline from natural systems, but when the oyster beds were removed, there was an increase of sediment pressing against the land. They are now being re-studied to determine better intervention plans against flooding.
