Investigations of salmonella outbreaks revealed that the outdated policies and influence from industry has hindered action to prevent pathogens that cause foodborne illness from entering the food chain.
A multi-drug resistant Salmonella infantis is thought to be responsible for at least 8,000 cases of food poisoning and many outbreaks since 2018. The USDA has identified the presence of this strain in chickens, on average, twice a day this year, indicating that the pathogen may originate further upstream in the food supply chain.
