Post-Brexit Britain: Unforeseen Consequences on the Food Industry and Future Public Health

About the Project

NYU student Linda Phung compiled background research and established the context of ultra-processed food (UPF) in the UK and conducted a literature review on the link between UPFs and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). She worked to review the link between UPFs and childhood obesity, as well as the public health policies regarding UPFs in different countries, the limitations of UPFs consumption in national nutrition guidelines, and present UK policy regarding UPFs. This included conducting a literature review to develop a thorough understanding of the many-layered issue that transpires through many industries before affecting the consumer, a policy brief to create recommendations for how to move forward to best minimize post-Brexit food industry attributable deaths, and writing blog posts digesting complicated discussion points in a short and succinct manner for the general public to understand.

About the Project Organization

“C3 Collaborating for Health builds multi-sector Collaboration to catalyse action in the global community, to address non-communicable diseases’ leading risk factors by promoting 3 behaviour changes:

    • improving what we eat and drink
    • stopping smoking
    • increasing physical activity

Vision

Imagine a world where people are not dying from preventable chronic disease…because they find it easier to live healthy lives.

History

That was the dream of our founder and current director, Christine Hancock, when she started C3 Collaborating for Health in 2009. Christine enjoyed an illustrious career in nursing, including many years as the CEO of the Royal College of Nursing and as president of the International Council of Nurses. But she came to realise that healthcare was intervening too late in a person’s life. This delay meant that people were suffering and dying from illnesses that could have been prevented. In a time when healthcare was largely equated with disease and sickness, Christine made a bold decision: to shift the focus to prevention and wellbeing by addressing chronic disease before people fall sick or need care.”
