Dr. Zhaoxi Zhang

Dr. Zhaoxi Zhang is a Faculty Fellow in the Center of Urban Science + Progress at the Tandon School of Engineering. Zhaoxi is an urban health strategist working at the intersection of the built environment, human health, and technology. She is passionate about applying interdisciplinary knowledge and data-driven strategies for healthier urban design. Driven by a desire to address the challenges of climate change, disease, and inequality, her goal is to unite collective efforts to create healthy living environments for all people.

Communications Coordinators/Research Assistants

         

Rachel Wu is a senior studying Media, Culture, and Communication and Global Public Health. Her public health interests include the communication and coordination between various stakeholders like researchers, government officials and the public in addressing public health issues. While studying at GPH, she has engaged in various public health initiatives on the school to global level from distributing PPE and monitoring mask-wearing compliance as an on-campus public health ambassador to conducting monitoring and evaluation of HealthRight International’s global health programs in Kenya, Uganda, Ukraine, U.S. and Vietnam. In her free time, she enjoys running, watching TV shows and crocheting. 

Hailey North is a second-year undergraduate student studying Media, Culture, and Communication and Global Public Health. Her research interests include how one’s environment contributes to health disparities, particularly concerning access to nutritional foods among children. She currently enjoys working as an elementary school tutor and hospital volunteer, sparking her passion for serving others and building community. In the future, she hopes to help bring pediatric care to underserved communities.

Research Assistants

Rimsha Minhaz is a first-year in Master’s in Public Health (MPH) in the Department of Global and Environmental Health. Having done outreach work as a dentist in rural India, she is extremely passionate in researching the social and cultural factors that influence the well-being of women and children in underserved communities. She wants to contribute to research that promotes sustainable solutions for improving health outcomes in these communities. In her free time, she enjoys traveling and exploring new places.

Esther Lee is a second-year undergraduate student studying Global Public Health and Media, Culture, and Communication. Her research interests include working with children and adolescents and promoting health policies for them, pertaining to environmental and socioeconomic backgrounds affecting access to education and healthcare. 

Margaux Lesser is a junior studying Global Public Health and Sociology. Margaux’s research interests include the social determinants of health in terms of environmental health specifically food options and transportation.
Megan Stephans is an undergraduate majoring in Anthropology and Global Public Health, with a minor in Environmental Studies/Environmental Biology. In the past, she has worked with a CDC doctor researching disadvantages in the disabled community and is interested in environmental public health as well as healthcare.
Emily Wang is a sophomore studying Nursing and Global Public Health. She’s passionate about working within her community to understand the population’s diverse health needs and to transform research into equitable public health policies. 

Ailin Yao is a junior undergraduate student majoring in Media, Culture, and Communication and Global Public Health. She is deeply interested in exploring the global impact of environmental issues on well-being including mental health, and physical health outcomes. Ailin also seeks to understand how public policies can mitigate environmental stressors and promote equitable health outcomes for communities worldwide.

 

Eeshani Dadwal is a second-year undergraduate student majoring in Global Public Health/Communicative Sciences and Disorders with minors in Data Science and Chemistry. Her research interests include how environmental stressors and sociomedical factors contribute to attitudes held by immigrants towards healthcare.

 

Asfahan Bahlouli is presently a senior at Brooklyn Technical High School, majoring in biological science. Her research interests encompass exploring how one’s environment influences health disparities. She aspires to understand how public policies can alleviate environmental stressors and foster equitable health outcomes globally. During her leisure time, she enjoys volunteering for senior patients at the hospital, creating Arabic calligraphy pieces, and reading in horror literature.

Elena Wali is a second-year undergraduate student at NYU studying Global Public Health and biology. Her research interests include how environmental health plays a role in shaping sociological, psychological, and biological factors, particularly concerning women and children’s health. She is eager to learn more about health disparities and disadvantages related to environmental health. She is currently a certified EMT and hopes to pursue a career in obstetrics and prenatal care.

 

Xueliang Yang (Summer 2024 CUSP-GX 900X – Guided Studies) is currently a master’s student in Applied Urban Science & Informatics at the Center for Urban Science and Progress at NYU’s Tandon School of Engineering. His research interest spans across urban infrastructure, urban environment, and urban health, with a particular focus on how the built environment in cities impacts residents, especially their behavior and mental health. He is dedicated to creating more livable urban spaces. Prior to joining NYU, he graduated from the University of Liverpool with an honours bachelor degree in Mathematics with Finance.

Xiaoyue Zhang (Summer 2024 CUSP-GX 900X – Guided Studies) is a second year master student at the Center for Urban Science and Progress at NYU’s Tandon School of Engineering.  She is participating in the “Mapping Urban Stress” project of this guided study.  She has a strong interest in urban mental health, She also has a keen interest in the strategic management of urban economic development, including policy-making, and investment strategies that foster sustainable growth in urban areas. Through this guided study, She hopes to gain a deeper understanding of the interplay between the environment and urban psychological health, and she is committed to making significant contributions to the Urban Stress project. 

 
Isabel Martell is currently a junior at The City College of New York, majoring in Biology with a minor in Public Policy. She has a strong interest in health disparities. Driven by a strong passion for public health, she plan to purse graduate studies in epidemiology, focusing on improving health literacy within minority communities. In the past, she participated in a biotechnology skills lab last semester, and she is excited to gain more technical lab/research experience through this opportunity!
