Applications for the Summer 2025 SURP will be accepted starting January 1st until March 1st. To receive full consideration, all student application materials, including letters of recommendations, must be submitted no later than midnight ET March 1, 2025.
WHAT ARE THE PROGRAM DATES?
The program is full-time, Monday – Friday, for 10 weeks starting June 2 and ending August 8, 2025.
WHAT DOES IT COST?
You will receive a stipend of $10,000. There is no application fee and no tuition for this program. You are responsible to pay your living expenses while participating in the SURP program, including costs of housing, food, transportation, etc.
The Simons Center for Computational Physical Chemistry is located at 24 Waverly Place, New York, NY, on the campus of New York University. We are on the island and borough of Manhattan in the neighborhood called Greenwich Village.
WHERE WILL I LIVE?
You’ll receive a stipend of $10,000, only — Housing is NOT provided as part of this program. You are responsible to find your own housing and pay your living expenses for the duration of the 10-week program, including housing, food, transportation, etc.
You may elect to stay in NYU campus housing at your own expense. It is safe and affordable, and located close to where you’ll work. Contact NYU Summer Housing to learn about options and costs.
Your research project will be a full-time commitment, so your choice of housing location should take commute time into consideration.
WHO CAN APPLY?
This program is only open to U.S. Citizens who are not current NYU students. College freshmen, sophomores, and juniors may all apply. You are not eligible if you plan to graduate in the Spring or Summer, 2025.
No previous research experience is required. However, you should have a background in physics or physical chemistry, be familiar with thermodynamics and/or quantum mechanics, and have some programming experience.
DO I NEED TO SEND AN OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT?
No, unofficial transcripts are fine!
The SURP program administrator and the faculty mentors review all completed applications. We look for: (1) How well your research goals and interests match those of the Simons Center faculty; and (2) How much relevant experience/background you have in chemistry, physics, and/or programming.
While academic transcripts are an important, we carefully consider a wide range of factors. From accomplishments both in school and outside the classroom, to personal attributes and experiences. These often overlooked indicators are strong reflections of the qualities needed to succeed both academically and personally.
CAN I REQUEST TO WORK WITH A SPECIFIC FACULTY MENTOR?
Yes! In fact, the closer your research goals and interests match those of the Simons Center faculty, the better! If you wish to work with a particular faculty mentor, be sure to mention it in your Personal Statement.
WHEN WILL I KNOW IF I’VE BEEN ACCEPTED?
You can expect to hear from us no later than April 15 of the year of the program.
If you accept an offer for summer research elsewhere, please let us know as soon as you can by emailing: SimonsCenter@nyu.edu.
ARE THE PROGRAM DATES FLEXIBLE?
Only under special circumstances can the arrival and departure dates to and from the program be adjusted. Please contact us at SimonsCenter@nyu.edu to enquire.
CAN I TAKE A SUMMER COURSE OR GET A SUMMER JOB WHILE IN THIS PROGRAM?
No. The SURP program requires a full-time commitment that does not allow time for additional summer course loads or jobs.
Located in the very heart of the Washington Square campus, the Jeffrey S. Gould Welcome Center at New York University hosts on-campus visits along with several on-campus events. Note, however, that this tour does not include SURP-specific locations.
