The Simons Center aims to become an international locus of support for the computational physical chemistry community, offering a stimulating environment to foster aspiring researchers as well as world-class scholars wishing to study and work in New York City.

Seminar Series and Topical Workshops

The Simons Center’s seminars and workshops bring the global computational physical chemistry community to NYU for education and collaborative exchange.  See our Events Page for details and schedule.

Light-Matter Seminar

The monthly Light-Matter Seminar series focuses on various aspects of light-matter interaction, including polaritonics, quantum optics, material science, and quantum information science. Meetings are held in person, alternating between the Center for Computational Quantum Physics (CCQ) at the Flatiron Institute and the Simons Center for Computational Physical Chemistry at New York University. The series aims to strengthen and connect the light-matter community in and around NYC. These informal gatherings encourage speakers to share insights into their current projects, discuss open questions, and explore challenges.

Graduate Study

grad studentsThe Simons Center is housed within NYU’s Department of Chemistry, and offers a vibrant and intellectually stimulating place for graduate study, either at the Masters or Doctoral levels.  We are committed to maintaining an inclusive and supportive environment for all participants.  Full details about NYU’s Chemistry graduate program and application requirements can be found here.  A list of relevant coursework in computational physical chemistry is here.

Simons Center Graduate Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to top performing students at the end of their fourth year of Ph.D. study.  Interested students are encouraged to ask their research Mentor for application details.

SheComputes

SheComputes: Theoretical Chemistry Women’s Collective, serves as an empowering space for women-identifying theoretical physical chemists to engage in mentorship, community, and networking as we work towards gender equality.  Regular gatherings support the needs of our community, including guest speakers, professional development, social events, and more.

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP)

The Summer Undergraduate Research Program in Computational Physical Chemistry at NYU offers an intensive interdisciplinary research experience in the exciting area of theoretical chemistry.  Students chosen for this 10-week summer program receive a stipend of $10,000 and work closely with a faculty mentor on a project of common interest.  The program is open to U.S. students who do not already attend NYU.  We especially encourage students from underrepresented groups to apply.

New York City is one of the world’s most vibrant, culturally rich cities, and our students work at the center of the excitement.  Traveling to other areas of NYU and around the city is simple and affordable too, thanks to NYU’s transportation services and New York City’s extensive public transportation system. Both are easy to use and help students take advantage of all that New York City offers.

Applications open for our 2026 program offering on Jan 1, 2026.
