Niki Athanasiadou
Niki Athanasiadou

Niki Athanasiadou was a Research Scientist at RiskEcon® Lab for Decision Metrics @ Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences NYU from 2016-2017, and subsequently a Research Scientist in Population Health at the NYU Langone School of Medicine, serving as liaison between the medical school and RiskEcon® Lab. While at RiskEcon® Lab, Niki coordinated interdisciplinary research on utilizing demographic, clinical and digital behavior data for understanding obesity incidence in the US. This project was part of the RiskEcon® Lab CEcADA external partnership initiative.

Niki presented her research at the inaugural InsurTech Science and Engineering Expo co-hosted by Numerati® Partners LLC and RiskEcon® Lab in 2018. She is currently a Data Scientist at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Steph Choe

Steph Choe interned at RiskEcon® Lab for Decision Metrics @ Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences NYU from 2015-2016, participating in a workstream on the potential environmental and economic impact of the hypothetical derailment of Bakken crude-oil tank trains along the Hudson River, working under the guidance of senior industry professionals. This team presented research to Scenic Hudson, one of the largest environmental non-profit organizations. This project was part of the RiskEcon® Lab CEcADA external partnership initiative.

Steph graduated with a B.S. in Finance and Statistics from NYU Stern School of Business, and is currently an Associate in Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Research at Citi.

Samantha D'Alonzo
Samantha D’Alonzo

Samantha D’Alonzo was an Assistant Research Scientist at RiskEcon® Lab for Decision Metrics @ Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences NYU in 2016, participating in a research workstream on the marginal peer effects of text based social media indicators on the propensity for obesity in New York State using statistical analyses. This project also involved implementing SIR (Susceptible-Infected-Recovered) models based on the statistical analysis conducted, in order to simulate the propagation of obesity. She reached the semi-finals of the 2017 Regeneron STS science competition (the competition formerly sponsored by Intel and previously Westinghouse) for her paper Statistical and SIR Modeling in NY State of Syndrome X based on Text Based Indicators from Social Media and Food Environment. Samantha presented this research at NYU Social Media and Political Participation Lab (SMaPP), the 2017 IEEE MIT Undergraduate Research Technology Conference, as well as the inaugural InsurTech Science and Engineering Expo co-hosted by Numerati® Partners LLC and RiskEcon® Lab in 2018.

Samantha graduated in 2021 from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with a B.Sc. in Applied Mathematics, and is currently an Infrastructure Rotational Development Program Analyst at Jane Street, a quantitative trading firm.

Katherine Erickson
Katherine Erickson

Katherine Erickson was a Junior Research Scientist at RiskEcon® Lab for Decision Metrics @ Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences NYU in 2016, and served as lead programmer for the Lab’s simulation and visualization demonstrating the application of models such as Lotka–Volterra to the study of population dynamics. The project was showcased at the Black Rock Forest Consortium annual benefit luncheon in 2016, and was part of the RiskEcon® Lab CEcADA external partnership initiative.

Katherine graduated with an M.Sc. in Computer Science from Courant Institute, and is currently Principal Software Engineer at Foothold Technology.

Jion Fairchild
Jion Fairchild

Jion Fairchild was a Research Assistant at RiskEcon® Lab for Decision Metrics @ Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences NYU from 2019-2020. He participated in a workstream on cybersecurity research, focusing on physical layer exploits, including identifying vulnerabilities in commonly used IoT devices and participating in hackathon events such as Hack the Machine, a hackathon co-sponsored by Numerati® Partners LLC for solving problems for the US Navy, and CyberTruck, events focused on hacking naval and trucking systems respectively. At Hack the Machine, Jion participated in the team that placed second in the Cybersecurity track. 

While a student at NYU, he was also a member of the NYU Robotic Design Team, participating in the NASA Lunabotics Competition, for which the challenge is to design automated mining systems for the lunar regolith. In the photo above, Jion is test-fitting an early prototype of camera vision glasses for the visually impaired for a student project he helped advise on.

Jion graduated with a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from NYU Tandon School of Engineering in 2020, and is currently employed as a Manufacturing Engineer at General Motors in Rochester, NY.

Rohith Gandhi Ganesan

Rohith Gandhi Ganesan was a Graduate Research Assistant at RiskEcon® Lab for Decision Metrics @ Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences NYU from 2020-2021, participating in a research workstream in collaboration with the Agile Robotics and Perception Lab (ARPL) at NYU Tandon School of Engineering, focusing on path planning, navigation and task assignment applications of multi-agent Reinforcement Learning to autonomous drone swarm deployment in resource-constrained settings. (See 2021 co-authored preprint Comparative Analysis of Agent-Oriented Task Assignment and Path Planning Algorithms Applied to Drone Swarms (arXiv:2101.05161).

Rohith graduated in 2020 with an M.Sc. from NYU Tandon, and is currently a Software Engineer at Amazon.

Mayukh Ghosh

Mayukh Ghosh was an Undergraduate and Graduate Research Assistant at RiskEcon® Lab for Decision Metrics @ Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences NYU from 2019-2021. He participated in a research workstream at RiskEcon® Lab focusing on spectral vibration analysis of accelerometry signals for diagnostic and prognostics analytics in condition-based and predictive maintenance. Mayukh also participated in Hack the Machine (a hackathon for solving problems for the US Navy), as a member of a team that placed first in the Data Science track, working on predictive maintenance of an F-18 fighter.

Mayukh graduated with a BA and MSc in Computer Science from Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences NYU, and is currently a Software Engineer at Amazon.

Aria Halavati

Aria Halavati was a Graduate Research Assistant at RiskEcon® Lab for Decision Metrics @ Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences NYU from 2020-2021, participating in a workstream on electricity markets, employing relevant data to forecast and extract features from the market with thin granularity.

Aria is currently pursuing a doctorate in Mathematics at Courant Institute, with a focus on partial differential equations (PDEs).

Poornima Haridas

Poornima Haridas was a Graduate Research Assistant at RiskEcon® Lab for Decision Metrics @ Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences NYU from 2018-2020. While in the Lab she participated in a workstream on analytics of satellite-based imagery.

In 2019, Poornima participated in Hack the Machine (a hackathon co-sponsored by Numerati® Partners LLC for solving problems for the US Navy), as a member of a team that placed first in the Data Science track, working on predictive maintenance of an F-18 fighter. She also interned at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, where she worked on applying Deep Learning to graphs and computer vision problems.

Poornima graduated in 2020 from Courant Institute with an M.Sc. in Computer Science with a focus on Machine Learning. Subsequent to graduation, she worked as Research Associate at Numerati® Partners LLC, and is currently a Senior Data Scientist at PepsiCo.

Jude Naveen Raj Ilango

Jude Naveen Raj Ilango was a Graduate Research Assistant at RiskEcon® Lab for Decision Metrics @ Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences NYU from 2020-2021, participating in a research workstream on  computer vision and autonomous motion.

Jude earned an M.Sc. in Computer Science from Courant Institute in 2021, and is currently a Software Engineer on the Core Platform Team at C3.ai.

Yash Jajoo

Yash Jajoo was a Graduate Research Assistant at RiskEcon® Lab for Decision Metrics @ Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences NYU.

Yash graduated from the NYU with a Master’s degree in Information Systems at Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences NYU, and is currently a Software Engineer at Amazon.

Theodore Kim
Theodore Kim

Theodore (Teddy) Kim was a Graduate Research Assistant at RiskEcon® Lab for Decision Metrics @ Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences NYU from 2019-2020.  While a member of the Lab, he participated in a team which placed second in the Cybersecurity track at Hack the Machine, a hackathon co-sponsored by Numerati® Partners LLC for the US Navy, and was also captain of the NYU Robotic Design Team, participating in the NASA Lunabotics mining competition. 

Teddy graduated with an M.Sc. in Cybersecurity in 2021 and a B.Sc. in Computer Science, both from NYU Tandon School of Engineering. He is currently an officer in the US Navy.

Do Heon Koo
Doheon Koo

Doheon Koo interned at RiskEcon® Lab for Decision Metrics @ Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences NYU from 2015-2016, leading the intern team that participated in a research workstream on the potential environmental and economic impact of the hypothetical derailment of Bakken crude-oil tank trains along the Hudson River. He worked under the guidance of senior industry professionals and presented a final research product to Scenic Hudson, one of the largest environmental non-profit organizations. This project was part of the RiskEcon® Lab CEcADA external partnership initiative.

Doheon graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in Finance and Statistics from NYU Stern School of Business in 2017. His honors thesis, The Supercharger Effect: Comparison of Hybrid, Plug-In Hybrid, and Battery Electric Vehicle Adoption in New York State (Read Do Heon’s thesis here) was conducted under the guidance of Nobel Laureate in Economics, Professor Michael Spence, and Professor David K.A. Mordecai, and published as part of NYU Stern’s Honors Program.

Doheon is currently an Associate at Mubadala.

Tom Lagatta
Tom LaGatta

Tom LaGatta collaborated with RiskEcon® Lab for Decision Metrics @ Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences NYU in 2012, facilitating various courses, including the DSCM Workshop, the Advanced Topics in Applied Mathematics graduate seminar at Courant taught by Professor David K.A. Mordecai. Tom also organized interdisciplinary graduate-level reading groups and research collaborations. While he was an Instructor and PIRE Fellow at Courant Institute, he also collaborated with political scientists on designing mechanisms for driving voter turnout.

Tom earned a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Arizona in 2010, focusing on geodesics (optimizing paths) in random environments, and is currently a Principal Architect at Google.

Yu-Ping Lin
Yu-Ping Lin

Yu-Ping Lin conducted a research project at RiskEcon® Lab for Decision Metrics @ Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences NYU from 2018-2019, focusing on building an NLP based recommender system, in coordination with a fintech company. The aim of this project was not only to build an effective system but also to improve the performance via deep learning algorithms.

Yu-Ping graduated with an M.Sc. in Data Science from NYU Center for Data Science in 2019, and is currently a Software Engineer at Amazon.

Dhruv Mehrotra
Dhruv Mehrotra

Dhruv Mehrotra was an Assistant Research Scientist at RiskEcon® Lab for Decision Metrics @ Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences NYU from 2016-2018, participating in a workstream on developing low cost network infrastructure for rural regions.  Dhruv presented some of his research at the inaugural InsurTech Science and Engineering Expo co-hosted by Numerati® Partners LLC and RiskEcon® Lab in 2018.

Dhruv graduated with a Master’s degree from NYU Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) in 2017, and is currently an Investigative Data Reporter at Wired.

Jonathan Morales

Jonathan Morales was a Junior Researcher at RiskEcon® Lab for Decision Metrics @ Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences NYU from 2016-2021, participating in a workstream on mesh telecommunications infrastructure in developing countries, and conducted research at a biological field station in upstate New York, and assisted with other RiskEcon® Lab diagnostic testing, research and development assignments.

Jonathan participated in Hack the Machine, a hackathon co-sponsored by Numerati® Partners LLC for solving problems for the US Navy, and was a member of the team that placed second in the Cybersecurity track. Jonathan subsequently transitioned during summer 2021 to the X-Force Fellowship program, a summer internship focusing on real-world national security problems in collaboration with the US military. He is currently a DevOps Engineer at Learnosity.
