On Real-time composition
In this presentation I will discuss several aspects pertaining to real-time composition. Real-time composition is defined as a compositional practice utilizing interactive music systems in which generative algorithms with a non-deterministic behavior are utilized and transformed during a performance (Guedes 2008). Real-time composition systems are viewed as a subset of interactive music systems that enable algorithmic computer music creation during a performance. Although real-time composition is improvisatory in nature, I will establish a distinction between this type of practice and traditional instrumental improvisation, and present a framework for the design of real-time composition systems that distinguishes them from other generative music systems. I will identify two levels on the utilization of these systems (common user and specialized user) and two dimensions (sub-symbolic and symbolic) in which musical generation can be operated. Finally, I will give examples of existing real-time composition systems, show how they are increasingly used in musical software applications, and discuss their potential as novel tools for music education and enculturation.
