“Rhythmic Substructure” in music from African and the African diaspora
The rules and nuances of rhythmic organization are well known to performers within strong traditions of the ‘Black music’ world, and with little universally accepted meta-language to talk about and compare concepts, much fundamental information is seldom transferred to academia. This presentation will illustrate a variety of essential cross-cultural norms, showing the language of rhythm to be an equivalent to the language of harmony, with identifiable parallels from deep to surface structures.
