CARLOS GUEDES
ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF MUSIC, NYUAD
Carlos Guedes is a Portuguese composer, media artist, educator and researcher, with a multifaceted activity whose creative work comprises several commissions of music for ballet, theater, film and interactive installations, aside from traditional concert music. His music has been heard mostly in the US and Europe, in places such as The Kitchen, Joyce SoHo, Judson Church, ArCo, De Waag, SXSW, Teatro Nacional de S. João, SIGGRAPH, Shanghai eArts, Casa da Música, Expo ’98, Porto 2001 and Guimarães 2012 European Capital of Culture.
Carlos Guedes had responsibilities in the creation and improvement of several academic programs in music composition and multimedia in Portugal, including the Composition program at ESMAE-IPP in Porto (1st and 2nd cycles), the 1st cycle in Electronic and Musical Production at ESART (Castelo Branco) and the Doctoral Program in Digital Media at the University Porto in association with the New University of Lisbon and the University of Texas at Austin.
As a researcher, Carlos Guedes was the co-founder of the Sound and Music Computing Group at INESC TEC, a group that counts several internationally funded projects in the areas of Music Information Retrieval and Automatic Music Generation. His interests lie in the creation of automatic music generation and interactive music systems to facilitate musical creation and expression by non-specialists. A team led by Carlos Guedes won the first place in the Zon Multimedia Applications contest in 2011 with GimmeDaBlues, an application for iOS devices that generates Jazz Blues in real time.
