High-level rhythmic descriptors for music categorization
Rhythm is one of the fundamental aspects of music that defines how we recognize expressed musical emotions, musical styles, or suitable music listening context. Some of the important aspects of rhythm, such as tempo, syncopation, backbeat strength, etc., can be objectively measured and extracted from the signal. Some other aspects, such as perceived complexity of the rhythm or perceived rhythmic irregularity, are subjective, and not defined by a musicological vocabulary. However, these aspects have been shown to contribute to our perception of music in an important way. In this project we are working towards extracting high-level rhythmic descriptors, which can be used to predict musical emotion and special concepts associated with music.
