Week 2 _ Rhythmic patterns in Strudel

Sketch

  • What was your creative intention?

To be honest, my initial motivation was pure laziness—I only had about two hours left to finish this assignment because of my terrible time management. Then it occurred to me: besides the drum kit be cut up and randomized, why not make other music fragments to this format too? The first tune that popped into my head was this Beijing melody. As a Beijinger I’m actually  really appreciated this humor web phenonmenon, and I thought it could be made even more interesting. That’s how this music piece came about.

  • What was one technical challenge that was particularly fun or difficult, how did you approach or explore it?
The biggest challenge I encountered with this music piece was cutting out a section that fits the beat from the complete track. I spent about 1 hour on the rhythm because I found that once the rhythm is not neat, the music will sound weird. I also searched for some tutorials on making DJ songs, but no matter how hard I tried, it was not satisfactory. Therefore, in order to increase the diversity of the music, I chose to slice the human voice.

The Aesthetics of Failure: “Post-Digital” Tendencies in Contemporary Computer Music

  • In your own sentences, what are 2-3 concepts or ideas that stood out to you?

I’ve never really been able to appreciate noise music—it just makes my ears hurt. But one of my friends once experimented with using sounds from nature in their music (sound) piece, something a bit like Ryuichi Sakamoto’s async – immersion 2023. I think if you can build a coherent concept around music, then exploring noise can be really meaningful. But meaningless noise on its own probably doesn’t carry much aesthetic value.

  • Share one question or critique that emerged for you while reading. This could be something you’d like to discuss further in class, or an idea you’d like to challenge.
What kind of glitch music can be considered a successful attempt? (It remindes me the UIUC concert case we sharedd in class. The music itself wasn’t really pleasant, but it was highly experimental). Can this be considered as successful?
