FINAL PROJECT ESSAY
Accompanying-study Doll
I. Project statement of purpose
This idea is aroused by what I have researched before, which was a character in your computer and could interact with your mouse. What I have planned to do is to update the computer character into a doll that exists in reality, and what’s more, it can also be used to remind you that it’s time to study/have a rest, and give you the encouragement when you are working. As the doll’s appearance and audio can be changed to whoever you prefer, this doll can make a great effort in encouraging people to study more effectively, because you can be reminded by your favorite character.
II. Project plan

The character I plan to use. (Her name is Jiaran Diana and she is sooo cute! I love her!)
As this is a project using processing connecting to arduino, first I will try to finish the processing coding part (for time counting parts and the audio part) before 24th, Nov. After that, I will try to use arduino to connect the motors with the processing code, so that the doll can do some acts along with the audio part, and also add some pressure sensors so that people can use it to begin counting time. I hope this part can be finished before 5th, Dec. In the last week, I will make a doll and put the Arduino into it, and also consider adding some new factors if the time is enough.
I’ll try to make a code for making people be able to change the time to count, which can meet people’s need of how long they decided to study. As it’s a doll I made by myself, I will choose the character I like, but I will tell the audience that they can change the appearance and audio to anything they like, which make this project turns out to be a flexible one, and can meet whatever people want to make.
III. Context and significance
As my definition of interaction is having the process of “input, read, output” and also expressing the creator’s thinking, I think my project meets my definition because it is not only fun stuff but can also help you in some specific situations. Its interaction shows in the process of people changing their study period and wanting the doll to use acts and audio to urge them to study more effectively.
If let me talk about how this doll can be developed, I would say add more functions to it, such as you can chat with it (maybe same as Siri, but Siri is in the iPhone and my doll is in reality) and finally become one of your accompaniers. It can add interesting things to your life.
During the interaction lab courses, I found that creation can not only be artistic, but can also be funny and easy to approach, and that’s why I designed this doll. I hope I can use the knowledge I learned from the class to build a thing that can be really useful in my daily life. This is my design purpose and also the motivation to complete this project. Hope I can successfully make it.
