Logistical Information

Location:

The Richard Ettinghausen Library is located in the Hagop Kevorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies at 50 Washington Square South (entrance on Sullivan St.) The library and the lobby of the center are made up of architectural elements from the 18th-century Damascus home of the Quwatli family, purchased by the collector Hagop Kevorkian in the 1930s. Some of the furnishings and other architectural elements from the same home now make up part of the collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

NYU’s Washington Square campus is located on the ancestral lands of the Lenape people. More information may be found via the NYU-supported Guide to Indigenous Land and Territorial Acknowledgements, in the Smithsonian Magazine, and the Smithsonian Institution’s New York-based National Museum of the American Indian.

Lodging:

Lunch:

A vegan lunch will be provided for conference participants, volume contributors, and NYU and Cornell faculty. Attendees not in one of those categories will find many lunch options available near the Kevorkian Center, including: Ahimsa; Caffè Dante; Caffè Reggio; Eat by Chloe; Grey Dog; Honest Chops Burgers; Jane; Le Moustache; Lupa Osteria Romana; Mamoun’s Falafel; Manousheh; Toloache.

Religious Services:

Muslim conference attendees who wish to attend Jum‘ah prayers are welcome at the Islamic Center of NYU, 238 Thompson St. Bring a government-issued ID to be able to enter the building. Prayers are held from 1:15-2pm. More information available at: https://www.icnyu.org/events/jummah/.

Jewish conference attendees who wish to attend Shabbat services are welcome at the Bronfman Center for Jewish Life. Reform and Conservative services take place at 7pm at 7 E 10th St.; Orthodox services take place at 7:15 at 238 Thompson St. You will need a government-issued ID to enter both of these buildings. Weekday Catholic Mass is celebrated at Our Lady of Pompeii (25 Carmine St.) at 7am, St. Anthony of Padua (154 Sullivan St.) at 8am, and at the Catholic Center at NYU (238 Thompson St.) at 5:15pm.
