“To start from scratch” means to begin at the beginning or restart from the beginning. In other words, it means starting from zero. But do we start from zero?

According to the author of Zero to One, Peter Thiel, true innovation and entrepreneurial success rarely involve starting from absolute zero. Instead, they often build upon existing knowledge, resources, and ideas, aiming to create something entirely new or move from “zero to one.” Thiel argues that transformative progress often comes from leveraging existing foundations and then taking a unique path to create breakthrough innovations and technologies, challenging the notion of pure “starting from scratch.”

But do we need to start from scratch? Thiel’s perspective encourages us to question the traditional narrative of innovation and consider the value of standing on the shoulders of those who came before us. By building upon existing knowledge and resources, we can propel ourselves closer to that elusive “one” – where groundbreaking, world-changing ideas can be realized. It reminds us that innovation doesn’t always mean reinventing the wheel but can often involve making incremental improvements and daring leaps beyond what already exists.
